Former Gainesville mayor Frank Martin says rheumatism vanished after a Brahma bull charged him at a cattle sale. He recalls fleeing to a rafter and claims his condition has not troubled him since that day.
Iowa lawmakers opened a six member hearing into nursing home conditions following the Council Bluffs fire that killed 15. Testimony described homes as ranging from good to inhumane with officials urging stronger licensing and fire safety requirements.
The Iowa Senate approved by voice vote a resolution urging Gov. Herschel Loveless to provide an itemized statement on how five million dollars in savings could be achieved through state government reorganization. Sen. D. C. Nolan argued the measure aims to realize all possible savings while Loveless claimed proposed reorganizations in the budget would not yield substantial gains.
Parents must sign consent forms for tuberculin patch tests offered to students in Washington Ainsworth Crawfords ville and Riverside school systems. A folder with test details accompanies the letter, and the tape patch is removable after 48 hours. Return the signed form by the designated date for records before testing begins.
In Waterloo area two people died in separate crashes Monday. Dorothy Robison of Independence died when her car hit a truck at the U S 20 and Iowa 281 junction east of Waterloo. Henry Pries, 55, of Waterloo was killed when his car crossed into a northbound truck on U S 63 near here, possibly after a heart attack.
Committees in Des Moines approved measures to set a 65 mph day limit and 55 mph night limit on highways, bar labor union political contributions, and require high schools to offer college prep courses. Bills killed included a 10 percent gross receipts tax on trading stamps and a proposal allowing districts to tax state property. The House committee also reported a bill to position about 20 000 state employees without recommendation.
The tuberculosis patch testing program began in Washington County on Monday with 900 pupils in Kalona and Wellman schools tested by health officials and volunteers. Some schools achieved 100 percent pupil participation, with help from Miss Ethel Gregg Mrs Mayme Squire and other volunteers including Mrs John Plegger chairwoman of the nurse volunteers Mrs Ralph Martin and Mrs Floyd Sturgis of the Gray Ladies and Mrs Darrel Ross who oversees cards and records.
Samuel Henry Eash and William Swartzendruber of Wellman were lightly hurt in a two car crash Monday at 11 am at the intersection of Highway 81 and a city street in Wellman. Jim W. Thomas, who was uninjured, said he stopped at a stop sign and then collided with a car driven by Samuel Henry Bush. Each car sustained about $800 in damage.

The panel of officers and enlisted men weighs a possible six month prison term bad conduct discharge and pay forfeiture.
Burlington Iowa reports F Albert Monday left an estate estimated over 2 million dollars, most to fund a new hospital in his name. The will, filed in District Court, directs that the money be used for elderly care at Klein Memorial Hospital with a five year disposal limit.

Minick and Speed Furnishers announce a grand opening this weekend at their north side square location. Ray Minick and Bob Speed have run the store for nine years since renaming from Kiple & DePrenger Furniture Co. The event runs Thursday to Saturday with staff members Fred Bartow Vera Shepherd Clarke Yalbot and Mery Steele on hand plus factory reps and Bill Wessler on the organ.
Representative Overton Brooks announced a compromise delaying the Army six months of active duty for new Guardsmen to Jan 1 next year. The plan keeps Guard strength near 400,000 and allows earlier releases only as a last resort for draftees who switch to the Guard.
