In Columbia Tennessee on February 26 rioters clashed with police in the mink slide district. More than 590 state troopers swept two blocks arresting over 40. Four city officers two white men and others were wounded as gunfire echoed from barricaded buildings.
Washington reports meat prices will rise about 14 percent for the average family within a month due to wage boosts in the meat packing industry. The wage stabilization board issued three orders to clear wage disputes after the January seizure of the major packing firms.
Ray A. Stevens, manager of the Ottumwa field office of the social security board, will be in Washington at the post office from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. Thursday, February.
Washington February 26 The House considers expanding Federal Reserve power to reduce idle money in public hands to support anti inflation price controls Rep Fred L Crawford says the move is essential to maximize price control benefits The plan would raise reserve requirements forcing banks to hold more cash and sell securities to boost reserves trimming money in circulation Federal Reserve Chair Marriner S Eccles urged extending the price control law noting monetary options are nearly exhausted.

In Palestine near Lydda, armed Jewish groups raided three RAF air fields Ras el ain Lydda and Kastina around midnight. Police arrested about 5000 Jews in the Lydda area as a manhunt intensified after a running gun battle with British troops leaving one Jew dead. The raids involved explosives planted under aircraft wings and marked another flare of the long series of clashes in the region.

No opposition candidates have appeared and filings are due with the county auditor by March 25.
At a Washington board of education meeting W A Erbe was re elected as superintendent for the next school year. Erbe has been on leave since serving in the navy and earlier led the district since 1942. M M Schell will finish this year as interim superintendent with Erbe assisting on next year plans. The board also discussed re opening the junior college and potential building plans for the district with decisions deferred to a later meeting.
Omar Bradley and John Stelle met for 214 hours in Washington in a show of cooperation. Their joint statement avoided settlement details in their dispute, with Stelle calling for a congressional probe and Bradley sticking to plans to take over surplus army hospitals only with available medical staff.

Lyle Wandling and Donald Humes are jailed in Washington county on illegal transportation of liquor charges. They were stopped between Washington and Brighton by Patrolman Potthoff after two cases of whisky were found in their car. The pair signed a statement claiming they bought liquor for a Rock Island party and did not know Iowa law prohibited transport. They face fines or jail if convicted.
Miss Zyewart died yesterday at the county home in Washington County. She was 78, born in Poland, and had lived at the county home for 31 years. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Polish Catholic Cemetery in East Pleasant Plain after services at the Polish Catholic Church. A distant cousin survives. another cousin was buried yesterday in St. Joseph's cemetery.
