Ainsworth Fire Department was called to extinguish a blaze at the Ainsworth Four Corners Restaurant about 3 p.m. Monday when a deep fat fryer in the kitchen ignited. Extensive damage from fire smoke and water was reported. the business is closed for repairs. Operators are Vince and Eloise Overstreet.
Gov. Robert D. Ray defended his proposal to repeal state sales tax credits, saying it would not directly benefit many low income residents but would free $7 to $8 million annually for welfare and education programs. He argued the funds would aid the poor, while critics note many low earners already pay no state income tax. Ray also announced plans to attend the national governors conference in Washington and to view the Apollo 9 launch with VP Spiro Agnew, traveling to Cape Kennedy with his wife and returning Saturday morning.

Mamie Eisenhower and son John Eisenhower were at his side as doctors noted scar tissue may have caused the blockage.
Des Moines schools chief Dr. Dwight Davis on Monday said he is not alarmed by the Supreme Court ruling granting students symbolically protesting armbands. He notes protests have become common and may limit officials' ability to prevent disorder. The ruling reversed a 1965 Des Moines Board of Education ban on mourning armbands.
