A severe multi day winter storm battered the central United States with winds up to 50 mph and heavy snow. Dozens of deaths, widespread school closures, and massive highway blockages followed as arctic air drove temperatures to record lows from Tennessee to Michigan and into Alabama and Georgia.

Washington woman injured in two car crash
Janet Gardner of 1019 North Sixth Avenue Washington was treated at Washington County hospital for a wrench ed knee and head cuts after a two car crash at North Sixth and East Ninth Wednesday at 5 30 pm. The other driver Janet Heaton of 608 East Washington Street. Police estimated Heaton car damage at 300 dollars as Gardner car total wreck. Gardner struck Heaton as it crossed the intersection causing it to spin into a lamp pole. A minor East Washington Street accident followed. James Gerhart Moeller of route three Washington was fined five dollars for improper turn. Moeller and Keith Samuel Murphy of route two Washington were westbound when Moeller turned left from inside lane, hitting Murphy. Moeller car damage 150 dollars, Murphy car 250 dollars.

Y's Men Invite Tryouts for The Teahouse of August Moon

Mother and four children die in Ellicott City fire
A mother Mrs. Phyllis Owens, 31, and four of her five children Charles 11 Joan 8 Phyllis 7 and Sharon 6 perished when a three story home near the town fire station burned in Ellicott City Maryland. Police said the blaze likely started from an oil heater on the first floor.

In Meridian federal court UPI reports U S District Judge Harold Cox dismissed one felony conspiracy charge accusing 17 to 18 suspects in the 1964 Mississippi civil rights workers killings. He left misdemeanor indictments intact and noted the court did not rule on outstanding charges. Also in Washington Rep John Schmidhauser introduced a bill to appoint postmasters on merit, barring political party tests.

Youth Center Elects New Leaders and Schedules Friday Nights
The Youth Center board met Wednesday evening to elect new leaders effective June 1, naming Mr. and Mrs. Everette Miller and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Anderson.
