A Dallas waitress said a customer struck her on the head with a soft drink bottle after she declined his request. Police reported no serious injuries and continued to investigate the incident.
In Washington a Republican House caucus pledged to oppose a proposed 20 dollar per person income tax cut. Leader Martin predicted the measure would be removed from a larger tax bill, which also extends corporate and excise taxes. Democrats claimed enough votes to pass the cut, while Eisenhower warned against it.
A four engine KC tanker refueling plane crashed after takeoff from Sedalia Air Force Base killing nine of eleven aboard. Two parachuted to safety. Casualties include Capt. Ralph D. Dalton of Hartville Missouri and T.Sgt. John Vance Krangs of Pella Iowa. Wreckage burned for hours on the David Stiles farm ten miles from the base. Civilian witnesses reported a tail fire and multiple fuel tank explosions.
DES MOINES. Press Club President James Ince announced the Bent Cane Award will be presented March 24 to the Iowan with the year’s most outstanding contribution in journalism radio or television. The Des Moines Press and Radio Club revived the honor last year and it remains open to all Iowa communicators. Carl Hamilton of the Iowa Falls Citizen and Hardin County Times was the previous recipient.
Lt Gov Bill Smart spoke at the Washington Kiwanis to promote Kiwanis objectives for 1955 and push service to community state and nation. The event included plans for a 40th anniversary push and remarks on education highway safety public leadership and international friendship. Don Radda will receive a Tall Corn Contest plaque Friday at 11 am in Des Moines with ceremonies at the statehouse broadcast by WHO radio and WMT-TV.
Harold R. Worthman directs the Ainsworth high school combined band and vocal concert in the school gym Friday February 25 at 8 p.m. The program features Girls Glee club selections, Mixed chorus pieces, Boys Glee club songs, Band numbers including Sousa and Strauss marches, a saxophone solo by Janet White, a piano/narrator piece with Maxine Elliott, and a grade school twirling ensemble finale.
The Washington Public Library will display 22 Currier Ives lithographs in the art room on the library’s second floor during March 7 to 12. The prints come from a valuable Travelers Insurance collection displayed through arrangements by Paul Horak and Nathaniel Currier, Merritt Ives.
William L. McGinnis of Ainsworth was named president of the Washington County Beef Producers Association at the annual board meeting held at the Farm Bureau building. Marion Augustine is vice president and Tom Robb secretary treasurer, with directors including Huston Evans Crawfordsville Schneider Riverside Norman Wellman Flading Huber and Brinton. The group plans to cooperate with May beef promotions by the Iowa Beef Producers association and outlines tentative year town activities. Population growth from 1940 to 1950 is noted, led by California with a 53.3 percent rise.
The Southeast Iowa Conference of Community Leaders will hold a two part program at the Washington YMCA on March 17 with John Ganon presiding at the evening session and officer elections. Afternoon sessions feature Mrs. Harold Honohan of Des Moines and reports from Cantril Boneport Union Electric Newtonkeokuk Iowa Council of Churches and local councils. Dr Robert Ray from the University of Iowa will speak on Effective Citizenship in Our Home Communities along with remarks from Dr Walter Stiegelman.
Independence high school in Iowa was leveled by a fast moving blaze that began on the top floor of a two story building. Firefighters said the roof collapsed before any equipment could be saved and officials estimated half a million dollars needed for replacement. A new junior high was to open soon and some students would attend there while temporary quarters were arranged for all students.
Iowa lawmakers report the push for bigger road funding has cooled. The session shows little support for raising the gas tax beyond a temporary 1 cent, with talks of permanentizing that rate and a slow pace on highway modernization. Gov Hoegh and candidates touted faster improvements but the outlook remains cautious amid debates over safety, widening, and road bonds.
Two Iowa House members Rep. Roscoe Pollock and Rep. William Dillon seek an investigation into Highway Commission purchases. They ask for a five member committee and data on bids contracts and purchases over two weeks old. The dispute follows friction between Gov. Hoegh Lt. Gov. Elthon and the Senate over commission appointments.
Ina Mae Poland died Wednesday at 10:55 p.m. at her daughter's home in Missouri where she had lived since her husband’s death in 1951. Funeral services are set for Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Jones funeral home with Dr. W. J. Stevens presiding. burial in Elm Grove cemetery. Born April 16, 1887, in Wayne county Iowa, she married Thomas Farmer in 1911, who died in 1920, and later David Poland who died in 1951. Surviving: daughter Chlora Fern Goodwin of Washington. son William Thomas Farmer of Washington. five grandchildren. sisters Eva E. Calef of Oskaloosa and Ollie Starr of Ontario Calif.. brother Carl L. Greer of Sewal Iowa. one son Clark and one daughter Florence deceased.

Charles Pemple, foreman of the Eveready Plumbing and Heating crew, suffered a gash on the top of his head when a ladder fell this morning. He was hospitalized and received several stitches but is not believed to be seriously hurt.

The Iowa Senate passed a bill imposing prohibitive licensing fees on trading stamp companies, with a 33 to 13 vote amid strong protests and telegram campaigns. The measure sets up to seven thousand dollar licenses per stamping site and cites a two percent price markup by retailers.

A light plane crashed five miles northeast of Indianola Iowa killing three aboard. Pilot Tom Hulme of Grand Island Nebraska was identified. two other occupants presumed dead. The crash halted near 9 30 p m Wednesday amid low fuel and snow.
Washington officials say the United States is running out of patience with UN efforts to release 15 American fliers held by Communist China. The U N must not rely solely on Dag Hammarskjold, though no deadline is set for U S action. Hammarskjold reportedly has one or two maneuvers left, following a failed Peiping mission earlier this year.
Mrs A E Atchison of 122 West Main fell at her daughter Dr Jean Marshall’s home in Solon Iowa and broke her right leg above the ankle. She is recovering and it is not known when she will be able to come.
