Chicago Mayor Anton J. Cermak lay near death in Miami after being wounded by gunfire from Giuseppe Zangara. His illness includes colitis and a lung condition, with doctors giving him only a 10 percent chance to live and measures taken to stabilize his heart and oxygenate his system.
Tonight at Fairfield the Washington high school basketball team can clinch second in the Little Six if they defeat Fairfield, while Burlington leads and Mt. Pleasant could force a share of the title. Scott and Jackson vie for season scoring lead as Washington hopes for a strong performance.
Helen Melinski placed first in a Washington high school vocal solo contest held in the school auditorium earning the soprano representative spot for the state music series this spring. In Geneva the Japanese delegation walked out as the assembly adopted a report blaming Japan for Manchuria. The vote 42 to 1 urged withdrawal from Manchuria and restoration to Chinese sovereignty. China’s Yen voted Yes while Japan abstained from content.
