Growth of East Pleasant Plain thrives after the Rock Island cutoff from the Brighton river bridge to Perlee. J Harvey and partners run a major general store with diverse lines, while A L Crumly handles lumber and grain. Local developments include a new savings bank, cheese factory, blacksmithing, hotel, post office, and a busy stock trade led by Henry Pickard. The town’s prospects rise as merchants expand and a strong community tradesbase forms. The Gingerbread Man musical premiering at the opera house adds cultural appeal to the rapid urbanization.
