Davenport reports the Mississippi River ice jam remains a danger as the river falls from 19.0 to 18.2 feet. Army Corps engineers Dr. Ernest Marshall and Larry Beauden will survey the 10 mile jam while considering dynamite and gate closures to break it up. Temperature rise may aid movement. 150 families evacuated with Red Cross aid ongoing.
Pat Burroughs of the Hi-Rollers league at Melody Lanes nearly achieved a 300 game Tuesday night posting a 299 after 11 consecutive strikes. He finished with 165 for a 631 series as the Washington Oil team teammate and league members watched as his score was registered with the American Bowling Congress.

Washington Community schools instrumental music department presents three bands in concert Thursday at 7 30 p m in the high school gym. The grade school band performs Lively Feet and Toy Land. The junior high band plays Variation Overture Highlights from Mary Poppins and Hopak. Ronald Wise directs both bands and Alan Bergstrom directs the high school symphony band for the remainder of the program featuring five selections including Heating Lighting March Ellington Portrait Clarinet on the Town Calypso Joint and Stand By March. Note the concert starts at 7 30 p m instead of 8 p m.
Paul Klotz 73 retired auctioneer died at 10 10 a m today in Muscatine General Hospital after illness Tuesday Funeral is Saturday at 1 30 p m at Stacy Lewis Funeral Home Columbus Junction Rev Hubert Sunderman to officiate Burial will be in Columbus City Cemetery He was born November 12 1892 at Columbus Junction son of T J and Annie Stapp Klotz He married May John February 18 1922 She died February 26 1963 and he later married Nellie Smith September 26 1963 She survives along with many nieces and nephews He was the last of his immediate family.
Boy Scouts of troop 237 spent three days camping in Beenblossom timber south of Washington despite frigid weather. Scoutmaster Davy Crockett and assistant Louis Pailliotet reported good attendance and a fine time, with participants Joe Gilmore Dan Hanson Wayne Whitham Doug Greenlee Randy Crockett Robert Thomas Larry Mabb Ed Long Steve Davison Alan Cowell Gary Goodell Jim Herdlicka and Bill Wagner.
Gustin C. Haskins, 614 E. Madison, Washington, Iowa, has painted about 600 pictures since taking up art as a pastime. He served as a railroad painter and interior decorator, now works on church murals and landscapes, with pieces in fifteen states. His life centers on faith and art as he plans to continue painting and placing works in homes or as gifts.

The Washington Future Farmers of America held their 19th annual parents and sons banquet at Captain's Table. Speakers Mr. and Mrs. C. O. Greenlee presented slides on South America. James Birney received the Honorary Chapter Farmer Degree. Awards went to Tony Ross Ira Sojka Ron Wehr and Larry Applegate. Officers listed include Ron Wehr president Robert Jacobs secretary and others. The event aligned with National FFA Week.
A public meeting at the Legion Hall in Washington will discuss health care benefits provided by Medicare. Sponsored by Iowa Blue Cross and Blue Shield, staff will explain how Medicare and Blue Cross Blue Shield will work together for persons 65 and over. All interested individuals or family members are urged to attend.
Eight Washington dealers sponsor a two day Appliance Show at the Iowa Southern Utilities building. From 1 to 9 p.m. Thursday and Friday visitors can view air cushioned refrigerators ovens with long cook times six cycle jet action washers no frost fridges and self cleaning ovens. Representatives will explain terms such as deep surge magic ice makers jet action washers and power vane dishwashers. A $220 prize pool is offered to registrants.
The 80th World Day of Prayer service will be held Friday February 25 at 2 p.m. in the Christian Church Washington. Mediation by Mrs Ruth Noline, a longtime activist with YWCA and local churches, will focus on You Are My Witnesses as the event theme.
Allan Molander of Crawfordsville claimed the champion carcass at the Washington County Quality Park Show announced by John Halstead of Rath Packing Co. The winning barrow weighed 210 pounds live and 154 pounds carcass with a 29.1 inch length and 1.07 inch back fat. Loin eye measured 5.64 square inches and ham and loin combined 45.20 percent. Keith Horn of Washington owned the reserve champion with a 215 pound live weight, 161 pound carcass, 30 inch length, 1.10 back fat, 5.5 inch loin eye and 44.9 percent ham and loin. Other placings included J. T. Settles, Winfield. Elwood Yoder, Wellman. Gary Jones, Winfield. Geo. Horn, Washington. Clyde Meeker, Oakville. Keith Hemingway, Iowa City. Don Sheetz, Washington. Of 72 hogs entered, 40 met certification standards. Bob Case of the CAA Swine Testing Stations discussed using carcass and boar testing data for quality herd improvement. Payment and premiums were distributed, with silver trays awarded to champions.
