Thirteen hundred US marines aboard the Chaumont are within about 18 hours steaming distance of Shanghai. A strict guard will be kept in the International Settlement and the French concession as the general strike subsides and some 25 000 of 100 000 strikers return to work.
Y M C A physical department forms subcommittees with chairmen named for volleyball basketball floor and apparatus physical examination and swimming. Eastwood selects chairmen Lee Holland Guy Carlton A W Clow C W Stewart F W Eastwood and each chair will form his own committee to outline policy.
Davenport 55 year old R D Draper fired three shots at Capitol Orpheum cashier Miss Rosemary Donohue then killed himself as doorman Glenn Heiser fired at him. Donohue unharmed autopsy shows Draper died from self inflicted wound. Heiser’s bullet grazed Draper’s chest. Draper had a police record and two daughters in Clinton.
Floyd Tucker of Washington high school cleared 11 feet 8 inches at the State University of Iowa field house, the best by a Washington boy in years, near the indoor record set by Cedar Rapids rival Boyer at 11 feet 9.5 inches. Bain tied for fourth with 10 feet inches as Oak Park of Chicago won the meet. Cedar Rapids Washington took second. Wellman earned five points with shot put podium finishes.
Madison Wisconsin Feb 23 Wisconsin defeated Iowa 24 to 21 to stay in the Big Ten title race. Andrews with five field goals and McConnell with four led the Badgers while Iowa trailed 15-4 at halftime before a spirited rally fell short in the final minutes.
The Cunningham and McKevitt families express gratitude to friends for kindness and assistance during the illness and death of their mother sister and aunt Margaret Cunningham. Mrs J McKevitt and family Mr and Mrs Leslie Payne.
After 28 hours of filibuster against the Johnson-Swing Boulder canyon dam measure the senate rejected a side track motion by Senator Ashurst to fund veterans with bonus certificates. The 30 to 43 result kept the Boulder dam bill in play as Senator Johnson urged continued debate toward a final vote.
Ralph L. Bunce vice president of the First Iowa State Trust and Savings bank in Burlington was elected chairman of group eleven of the Iowa bankers association for two years at the annual Burlington convention. Fred Skola of Kalona was named secretary. The gathering drew 825 bankers from southeastern Iowa and included speeches by President A. C. Smith.
In Braddock Pennsylvania Nathan P Weissman 19 was found dead at his father's manufacturing plant with a bullet wound and a revolver beside him. Police say despondency likely caused the act. In Gadsden Alabama Estelle Woodham 19 a Douglas Academy student ended her life after leaving a note saying she was tired of life and asking a brother be notified.
The Washington Loan and Trust company begins business in newly renovated city hall quarters on the square, offering modern banking rooms with three vaults. President Frank Sage leads a 15 year old institution with divisions in farm loans trusts investments and home builders loans.
In Chicago the mayoral race for April 6 features ex mayor William Hale Thompson Republican and incumbent William E. Dever Democrat as top contenders. Thompson swept the Republican primary while Dever faced little opposition, with Dr. John Din Robertson also running as an independent Republican health official. The primary was marked by violence including stolen ballots and injuries.
Des Moines Feb 23 The Iowa House approved an amendment to the state control bill proposed by Senator Fulton to ensure highway development funds pledged to counties voting bond issues are repaid within the next biennium creating an obligation against the state. The vote was 93 to 2.
A Leon Beatty post drum and bugle corps plans a special meeting next Monday to decide on measures for equipment purchase. Members currently rehearse with loaned instruments from Washington supporters and show steady progress under veteran instructor Jack Ream.
Councilman John C. Lodge pushes a grand scheme to replace city hall with an elaborate complex on the Detroit river as the core of a civic center. Mrs. Stanley Baldwin expresses a personal ambition to monogram household linens with a bold B.
Tabulations this morning show Thompson with 422,207 votes and Latsinger with 162,146. Mayor Dever polled 146,162 in the Democratic primaries, facing only one largely unknown challenger.
Former State Senator M. L. Bowman of Waterloo will address Iowa taxpayers at the local Y M C A at 7 p.m. Friday February 25 on issues before the legislature. Bowman led the last assembly as floor leader for a state bank guaranty law and against a $100 million bond plan for paved roads. He campaigns with farm and labor groups and offers to debate any legislator. Washington residents are expected to attend to hear him.
John Marsh, the maniac who shot two and wounded three on the Anderson farm near Valley, was captured at the Otto Munn farm near Yutan by Deputy Sheriffs Ed Cobb and John Dunn. Marsh, unconscious after a gun blow, was transported to Omaha jail, having eluded hundreds of pursuers and crossed the Platte River during a 25 mile escape.
President Coolidge signed a bill appropriating 10 million dollars to combat the corn borer pest in the midwest region. The measure aims to finance control and research efforts to protect crops.
