Roman Lanzilotta, 24, was fined 100 for drunken driving after his car struck a house crossed a lawn knocked over a tree gouged a chunk from another house careened into a garage pushing a car out and collapsing the garage in Mineola New York during a Sunday incident.
The Iowa secretary of state reports a surge in nomination papers reflecting an election year. Republicans lead with eight gubernatorial hopefuls, Democrats seek broad ticket access, and signing must follow party rules with notarization and county limits.
About 200 South Koreans blocked a railway near Chinchon to halt a train departing with 217 Indian soldiers bound for Inchon. American infantry and MPs dispersed the protesters with bayonets unused, delaying the train about 130 minutes before it continued to Inchon. The Jala burga troopship later ferried the Indians from Inchon harbor.

Senator McCarthy denounced Army Secretary Stevens for ordering Brig. Gen. Ralph W. Zwicker not to appear before his Permanent Investigations Subcommittee. McCarthy argued officers may refuse to answer under orders not to reveal information but must appear. He planned to quote Zwicker’s testimony at an SAR luncheon and release the full transcript in Washington later.
Mrs. George Deatsch aged 73 died at her Riverside home after a long illness. Funeral services set for Tuesday at 9 a.m. in St Mary's church with burial in St Vincent Cemetery. Rosary tonight at 7 30 p.m. at Sorden Adams funeral home. She was born May 1 1880 in Johnson county and married George Deatsch in 1900 at St Mary's Riverside. Survivors include four daughters six sons three sisters two brothers and other relatives. several siblings and parents preceded her in death.
All banks of Washington counts are expected to cooperate in this year’s Farm Operation School sponsored by the county extension office. The program targets young farmers and will be held Thursday February 25 at the YMCA. Dean Huston will open with managing a successful farm enterprise. Lill Oschwald will discuss crop production. Dr M R Flietinger will cover swine disease control. Tom Robb will discuss swine management. Jim Elliott will address government agricultural agency assistance at the noon luncheon. Afternoon sessions, led by Huston, will focus on farm management possibilities on a typical farm.
Jaycees and partner groups mobilize to recruit 48 more residents for a mobile X ray tour in Washington from February 27 to March 11. They will distribute posters and pre registration cards through local businesses under committee chair Robert Poyser and president William Perdock. Vital TB data shows 29 percent of 14 742 eligible residents are over 60 and deaths from TB are concentrated in ages 45 and older.
Grant Davis and his sons Tom Jim and Grant Jr. of Waterloo were guests at dinner on Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Tom Davis, the parents of Grant.

Buckingham Palace announced that Prince Charles and Princess Anne will join Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh on the royal tour in North Africa. The royal party sails from Portsmouth on April 15 aboard the Britannia to Tobruk, then returns home.
Washington county Democrats invite members to a meeting in the courthouse court room on Wednesday February 24 at 7 46 pm. Chairman Harry Levy said officials of the county organization and first district candidates will attend. Congressional campaign plans will be discussed.
Weekend traffic toll in Iowa rises with three deaths. A two car crash southwest of Spencer killed the T month old daughter of Mr and Mrs Raymond Warren and injured five others including Dale Warren and Lena Warren. Mrs Henry Z Bucks of Welton died in a crash with a concrete bridge abutment on U S 61 north of Davenport. David Neilsen 16 of Rowan was killed directing traffic after a fogbound incident near Garner when a tow truck overturned. John Finch of Crystal Lake collided with a tow cable and Neilsen as the fog limited vision.
Washington VEW auxiliary marks George Washington birthday by opening a patriotic information center at the Washington public library. The center offers pledge cards, constitution preamble, flag etiquette pamphlets, VEW Auxiliary Bulletin, and a reference book on the flag, near the library entrance.
The Seifert ladies wear shop in Washington announces a grand opening for Wednesday February 24 led by owner Jim Seifert. The remodeled store features greens cocoa chartreuse and coral interiors plus air conditioning new lighting and enlarged fitting rooms.
Gov William S Beardsley announced distribution of surplus foods to needy residents in four northeastern Iowa counties centered on Charles City. Surplus butter from Woodward State Hospital was delivered by National Guard trucks while welfare workers began local distribution. Cheese and canned meat will follow from other points as the 18 county district receives its first supplies.
Crawfordsville opens its adult evening farm school with a session on March 3 at 7 30 p m in the local school. Dr Jewell the veterinarian and Tom Robb extension director will discuss swine disease control and management. All interested persons are invited.
Senator William Langer urged a full Senate investigation of 10 charges against Marl Warren before confirmation as Chief Justice. Critics predict the Judiciary Committee will reject the probe and approve Warren swiftly. The uproar began after a subcommittee hearing raised claims of liquor lobbyist influence and ideological alignment with Marxist lines. President Eisenhower defended Warren as a top public servant.
