Virginia Woods, age 3, died in a hospital from burns after a trailer house fire caused by an overheated stove in Man son. The child, alone in the trailer, was rescued by her father Thurley Woods.
A record $74 per head average for 40 Durves sold at the C PD Giltner farm near Ottumwa. The sale drew buyers paying $200 per head from seven Midwestern states, surpassing the previous $65 record set in 191%. Top price was $235 paid by Frank Dempster of Arlington.
Davenport reports Syl McCauley, superintendent of the Iowa Soldiers Orphans Home, welcomes an Iowa Senate committee investigation into segregation. He notes older boys and girls mix at residence cottages with adult supervision, attend dances and basketball games, and aims for near normal activities as youths prepare for life, stating no trouble has occurred.
G. C. Kilborn a 39 year old lineman for the local REA was killed near Rockwell City when he touched a 7200 volt line while working a new line on the Otto Holm farm twelve miles west. He was unfastening his safety belt as the shock knocked him from the pole.
Indianola city council voted unanimously to provide $2,000 insurance for each of 45 fire department members. The policies will also carry $100 monthly indemnities for injuries.
Louis Jones and Martin Davenport from the Sac and Fox reservation at Tama waived preliminary hearing before a U S commissioner. Each father of two, they are charged with throwing mail bags from a truck at the North Western station, Tama, and pelting station agent Frank Cory with stones last Sunday.
Influenza reported in Mount Ayr forced 72 pupils to miss high school. State officials noted few cases in institutions and had not proposed closures. Des Moines visitors were barred from Broadlawns General Hospital due to colds and influenza. Dr A B Merkel warned infections were entering the hospital via visitors.
A large crowd attended a wallpaper show at the Y M C A gymnasium sponsored by Phillips and Hebner's drug store. The program explained wallpaper grades and demonstrated cleaning methods and color harmony with drapes and furniture accessories. Jack mn Cedar Rapids spoke as state distributor for Imperial Wallpaper, with Don Benblossom presenting period designs in related decor.
Mrs Will Matucha left yesterday for Moline Illinois to tend her ailing son Glenn who has a severe cold and is seriously ill with pneumonia.
Elvin Wood, 37, admitted killing Abner Nelson, 38, his closest friend and former schoolmate in Morris Illinois. Deputies moved him to Will county jail amid threats of lynching after the confession. Wood said he planned a ransom but scrapped it, shot Nelson, hid the body in his car, then threw it into the Illinois river. He cited debt and farm losses as motive.
The Y's Men club heard Iowa City airport instructor Loii Guthrie discuss flight basics and a tricycle landing system. He described stall risks near the ground and the move to plane speed landings, while the group also plans a water carnival benefit at the Y M C A pool with ten cent admissions.
Gene Gorham begins work this week at the Rukgaber hardware store to supervise sales and assist with window decorating. He brings eight years of retail experience to the position.
Two Macomb men were detained after an unsteady drive near Ainsworth. They admitted a prior drink, a quart of whiskey was found sealed in the car, but witnesses and evidence were insufficient to prove intoxication. The vehicle and liquor were confiscated and the men were sent home after a brief hearing before Justice J K Bovee.
An eight room frame house on a Wellman area farm belonging to Mrs. Robert Gates burned yesterday. Fire crews from Wellman and Washington Farmers Mutual could not save the two story and a half dwelling occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Sylvester Aller. downstairs contents survived while upstairs items were ruined. The Allers planned to move near What Cheer on March 1.
Mrs. E. A. Hofer of Cedar Rapids visits her mother Mrs. Mary Starr and sister Mrs. Wilbur Jackson. Mrs. Jackson had been visiting in Cedar Rapids last week, and Mrs. Hofer accompanies her back to Washington.

Paris reports a rumor of a clash between French and Italian troops on the Tunis Libya front last Friday. The French war ministry and Tunisia's governor deny it. The British and French foreign offices say they have no knowledge of any clash. Rome says the rumor is unfounded. Mussolini telegram to Franco reaffirms Italian troops stay in Spain until victory.
In Bucharest on February 22 the Balkan entente members Romania Yugoslavia Turkey and Greece agreed to recognize the Spanish nationalists as the local government but each nation may choose when and how to implement recognition.
Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon at the Presbyterian church for Mrs. C. P. Howell with Dr. F. W. Pastwood in charge. A vocal duet was performed by Mrs. Dunham Morrison and John Lloyd Hughes. Pallbearers included Dennis Clancy C. S. Lemmon Fred Neiswaneer R R. F. Dougherty William Rath and Tom Rickey. Burial followed at Elm Grove cemetery.
Washington County Play Festival presents four one act plays in the Brighton high school auditorium Tonight. Brighton and West Chester and Washington high schools stage A Wedding Hole Elmer Wise Girl and other roles with student casts and music between acts.

Washington Feb 22 The senate finance committee reported favorably a house bill for reciprocal taxation of government and federal salaries covering all salaries after December 31 1938. Senator Clyde L Herring of Iowa voted for the proposal. The bill applies only to government salaries and excludes the Roosevelt plan for reciprocal tax on income from government securities.
A tornado near Windsor North Carolina killed four people, injured about 100 and destroyed 40 homes. The storm cut a three mile path last night after a rain and wind storm which scattered families between home and town.
The R. C. Risk residence at 40% East Madison street suffered roof and shingles damage after a chimney fire during the morning. Water damaged an upstairs ceiling before the fire was controlled. Hazel Siberts owns the house.
