Senator Andrew Frommelt of Dubuque says he will press the Senate again to approve a constitutional amendment lowering Iowa's minimum voting age from 21 to 19. The Senate previously approved a proposed amendment before adjourning.
CAPE KENNEDY UPI two 11 inch rockets to be fired from Cape View elementary school grounds at 10 a.m. EST in memory of Apollo 1 astronauts Virgil Grissom Edward White and Roger Chaffee who died in the January 27 fire. Sixth grader Paul Davison leads the launch team. the event honors the astronauts and follows earlier school rockets including a recovered frog. The day also features Iowa voting age debate with House opposition and Senate reconsideration motions on lowering the minimum to 18 or 19. Governor Harold E Hughes favors 18.
Cuban Premier Fidel Castro boasted in Havana of 26 ice cream flavors with a target of 42, claiming the industry would outpace the United States. He threatened mass bureaucratic firings, pay cuts, and transfers as part of an all out war on bureaucracy and possibly moving the capital to Guaimaro. He also noted a sugar harvest to be the largest in six years, though officials had warned the island may miss 6.5 million tons.
The Washington City Council heard that the city pool filtering system must be repaired or replaced to open next summer. Nels Westermark, pool commission chair, warned of possible no opening without action. Robert Huber presented firm recommendations and a bid from General Filter Co. of Ames. competitive bids to be sought and presented March 6 for a final decision. The council also backed Green Engineering Co. recommendations for sewage disposal plant repairs and renewed a year permit for the Eagles Lodge.
In San Francisco Hubert H. Humphrey pressed for rural poverty programs and defended Vietnam policy during a 36 hour swing through the region. At Stanford in Palo Alto about 250 demonstrators surrounded him as he left Memorial Auditorium. Secret Service and deputies kept the crowd back and a nonstudent, Jeffrey Collins, 21, was knocked down and had his glasses broken as the car sped away with the vice president safe.
Richard Bordwell of Washington Iowa was fined 10000 dollars and sentenced to six months in jail for evading 1285 dollars in federal income taxes. Judge Roy L Stephenson in Des Moines led the case. Authorities said Bordwell earned 6200 dollars in 1961 but reported only 907 dollars as taxable income.
Des Moines policy action stalled as House Schools Committee tabled a bill creating a Division of School Transportation within the Department of Public Safety to provide bus service for public and private school students. Cost estimates and administration concerns sparked contention among lawmakers.
President Johnson urged a 17 nation disarmament body to quickly finalize a nonproliferation treaty to curb nuclear spread. He said the nuclear have-nots need not fear blackmail and that peaceful atomic energy use would be advanced. He warned the treaty must cover peaceful as well as military nuclear explosive devices and noted talks on freezing anti ballistic missile deployments.
A three story Britt hotel building in the business district burned Monday at about 1 30 p m no guests were inside the Allison Hotel and no injuries were reported Four cars parked east of the hotel were destroyed two owned by hotel manager Ray Nelson and one by Doug Wolf Nelson and his wife and their five daughters resided there firemen from Britt and nearby Garner kept embers from spreading and a wind shift shielded the Evangelical Free Church nearby

National Farmers Organization reports the bred cow sale far surpassed forecasts as markets tighten. Sales target 5 000 cows across Iowa Minnesota Dakotas and beyond, with Postville Iowa packing firm near 1 000 cattle by midnight. Additional sales centers included Spencer Ruskin Lawn Hill Wayland and Stanton, spanning several states west of and east of the Mississippi River.
U S B52 Stratofortresses blasted mountain hideaways in five northern provinces as UPI reports say 2,500 Communist fighters killed in weeklong battles. Marines surrounded a North Vietnamese battalion near Da Nang, with 194 dead, 65 prisoners, and 250 Viet Cong suspects rounded up in six miles south of the base.
United Press International reports Iowa will see partly cloudy skies and warmer temperatures tonight. Wednesday brings more clouds with a chance of light snow or flurries, ranging from lows of 15 to 25 and highs from 15 to 20 in the north to the 30s in the south.
