President Truman asked Congress to authorize up to 350 million dollars for relief in liberated countries. He said UNRRA is closing and the United States must not stop short of finishing the task. The funds would cover relief for the rest of the calendar year.
Des Moines workers walkout yesterday leads to eight major wholesale grocer firms going on strike, bringing total idle workers to between 250 and 260. Union seeks 1.90 to 1.97 15 an hour while some firms offer 31 per hour. Temporary contracts cover perishables and dry groceries as city maintains sufficient fresh foods.
The union service at the Christian church features Rev Milo J Phillipi with the sermon theme The Light of the World. Rev Polk presides and Dr George J Krogmeier of Fort Madison will take over the dentist office on West Main Street, replacing Dr T J Pease who plans rest and may resume later.
A major blizzard deluged the eastern seaboard with 12 killed nationwide and up to 19 inches of snow. The storm halted planes trains ships and buses, stranded rural residents, and crippled Washington and Newark as ambulances were blocked by snow.

Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon at Sherman's funeral home in charge of Dr. George Kerr, followed by burial in Elmoroy cemetery. Pallbearers were Noy Fields, David Jackson, John Porter, Charles Belles, Robert Porter and Vernon Weeks.
Chairman Tom Duncar of 1 Washington county drive announced the Kenney Fund campaign closed with last donation sent in. He notes the county total reached 1379 dollars for the Sister WKennes fund aiding war relief and an infantile paralysis drive despite ongoing contributions. Washington county ranked among the top five in the state for raised funds.
Town senate moves liquor-by-the-drink bill to a special order for next Tuesday. House assigns its dry beer bill as a special order for next Wednesday. Senate revenue bill passes 48 to 0 and heads to the governor for signature. House enacts an $800,000 1948 and $1,300,000 1949 appropriation to fund a military tax credit in addition to liquor revenue.
Nine newspaper publishers and editors touring the Pacific war theater praised Gen Douglas MacArthur's occupation policy in Japan. They called it a more liberal approach and noted political stability despite communist gains.

Des Moines reports dry forces win a major Senate victory as a beer control bill passes 33 to 10 with 17 abstentions. The measure allows local option councils to refuse beer permits and ban sales outside cities, raises license fees and taxes, and limits beer in restaurants roadhouses taverns and hotels with dining cars.
