London reports Axis broadcast claiming an American force of 30 000 troops and 90 Chinese divisions massed in southwest China to support a coastal landing. Transocean says allied units await a signal for a coordinated overland push with the coast invasion.
More than 1850 American bombers and fighters pounded Nurenberg in a second straight day of attacks. The U S airforce sent over 1200 Flying Fortresses and Liberators to hit the city’s vital railyards while about 650 Mustang and Thunderbolt fighters escorted the heavy bombers. Reports say the railyards were crowded with troop and supply trains as a major troop train stalled en route to the eastern front.
Judge P. J. Siegers of Newton presided in Washington today during the January term. Court matters were reviewed and addressed as part of the session.
American Marines push toward Iwo Jima airfield two as Japanese fire intensifies. Combat, casualties, and reinforcements rise with reports of 20,000+ Americans ashore and heavy losses on both sides. Manila fighting worsens with near 100000 Japanese casualties and looting reported.
Dr. Walter Daykin of the State University of Iowa will address a joint meeting of Methodist and United Presbyterian men’s brotherhoods on postwar labor demands. The talk titled Some Post-war Demands of Organized Labor follows a Mt Pleasant appearance. Dinner at 6 30 pm in the Methodist church dining room, tickets on sale, open to all interested men.
Des Moines OPA district reports across 64 counties that farmers are slow to submit non-highway gasoline and tractor fuel applications. Dist. Gasoline Rationing Rep. Fred Derrick warns a backlog may leave farmers without rations when field work starts. He cites last minute rushes and delayed responses despite new publicity urging prompt mailing of 1945 applications.

Soviet forces press toward Danzig and Duben as Red army tanks break through suburb defenses near Duben, within 13 miles of a Berlin bridge site. American fliers attacked Berchtesgaden and Hitler's mountain retreat firing bombs and rockets as eight Thunderbolt crews swept the fortress area. Reports say the raid faced heavy anti aircraft fire with little immediate indication of hits on the fortress. Brig. Gen. Charles H. Grahl headed to Washington to explain Iowa manpower needs to the selective service director.
County Supt. Lester B. Krabill belatedly reports the rural schools raised 870.77 for the tuberculosis fight, up from 754.10 last year. Colonel Arthur T. Wallace announced Iowa State Guard summer field training at Camp Dodge from July 8 to August 4, 1945. The schedule splits into two fourteen day periods with Second Regiment in the first period and First Regiment in the second. New War Department equipment, including more weapons and vehicles, will make this the most instructive training yet.
Lew Langhurst, Honeymead plant superintendent, spoke to the Y's Men’s club, showing sketches of soy bean processing. He traced oil and meal production to early German origins, noted patents in the U S, and said the plant’s capacity is about 35 to 50 tons of meal daily with 19 workers now and a seven week start expected. Washington county soy beans will be used.

American submarines have sunk a Japanese escort carrier a large converted cruiser a destroyer and 22 merchant vessels in new operations the navy announced. The cruiser was believed to be an 18000 ton converted merchant ship. The haul included two transports three cargo transports and 17 cargo vessels.
