Ex President Roosevelt address before the Ohio Constitutional Convention argues for pure democracy and constitutional living law. He defends popular rule against money in politics, urges recall of flawed decisions, and calls for regulating big business while protecting wage workers and small producers.
The Inland Daily Press association meeting at Hotel La Salle Chicago protests higher postage and censoring pure food ads. Officers elected include President Albert M. Smook and a multi-state executive committee. Next meeting to be held in Chicago in June.
Federal grand jury in Chicago handed down four five count indictments charging two railroad passenger agents four railroads and several theatrical interests with rebates and program advertising in lieu of money. Agents Rhein and Underwood named with railroads and the Heuck Opera House company Empire Circuit and Rudolph Hynicka plus James Fennessy among managers and firms in Cincinnati.
Official report from Cape Haitien says government troops suffered 40 killed and many wounded in a fierce fight with revolutionary forces near the Santo Domingo frontier.
Mexican federal forces won a battle near Cuernavaca as they drove rebels southward and recaptured Cruse de Piedra. The clash left 80 dead or fatally wounded and 27 prisoners were taken. Report from Mexico City dated February 21.
Reports describe 24 hours of fighting in multiple towns including Santa Maria and Cruse de Piedra with 900 federal troops against 2000 Zapatistas led by Emilio Zapata kin. Puebla prison escapees tally 20. Morelos sees stable but tense conditions. Torreon under siege as Zapata forces number about 8000.
Reports to the government weather bureau describe a severe blizzard blanketing Colorado with one inch to several feet of snow while rail service on mountain lines struggles. Texas endures a dramatic cold snap with some areas at 12 below zero and Dalhart closing schools after two weeks of warm weather.
In Middletown an east bound eighteen hour flyer between Chicago and New York collided with freight cars moved onto passenger tracks by error. The engine and the shifting engine were demolished and two firemen were severely injured. One man and several passengers suffered injuries but escaped grave harm.
Funeral services for William Penn Nixon were conducted at his Chicago home at 4 o clock by Dr Frank W Gunsaulus. Interment is scheduled for tomorrow noon at Spring Grove Cemetery in Cincinnati.
Sixty young women at P. V. Coblins in Minneapolis arrived with high heels left at home and wore spring-heeled shoes to keep their jobs. They faced the employer's scrutiny and were told never to wear high-heeled footwear at work again.
Justice Newberger of the New York Supreme Court refused to sign a decree granting author Upton Sinclair a divorce from his wife Meta Fuller Sinclair. Two referees backed Sinclair but the court found the photographs cited as evidence of improper conduct insufficient.
The Spanish cabinet approved 1,200,000 pesetas in relief for flood district residents. The action was announced from Madrid on February 21.
William Rucker on his Polo area farm reports a bull cast with two heads. The creature is described as strong and perfectly formed in every respect and remains a remarkable curiosity near Polo, Illinois.
The seventeenth annual Illinois State Farmers Institute opens in Centralia for a three day session despite a severe blizzard. Attendance is reported over 1,500 with plans for lectures demonstrations and discussions on agriculture and rural life.
Delegates at large to the national convention are pledged to Champ Clark for the presidency. The platform denounces the Republican party, praises reform and “Cannonism” overthrow, and supports home rule for cities. It also celebrates Ireland’s self determination efforts.
Washington dispatch reports President Taft began work at eight in the morning, unusual for official city hours. The day’s strain includes gate fights, Central American issues, potential opposition to a Pennsylvania Supreme Court nominee, and ongoing troubles prompting overtime.
A large posse aided by hounds and surefooted mountain ponies tracked a lone bandit across remote mountains near Piedmont and Altamont on the Baltimore and Ohio line. He robbed the New York St Louis express between two towns, was captured near Altamont, and jailed in Keyser. The bandit carried four watches and two revolvers.
Five people died instantly and several were injured as a cyclone from the west swept the outskirts of the city. Property losses from the storm total about $200,000. Shreveport Louisiana February 21 during the Mardi Gras celebration.
