Police found four juvenile boys inside the YMCA late Tuesday night. No damage or theft reported. This marks a second recent break-in at the Y, the prior incident involving extensive damage and stolen equipment.
Thieves stole more than $2,000 in goods in a Tuesday morning break-in at the Willows Supper Club located north of Washington. Entry was gained by forcing a rear door. losses included 42 cartons of cigarettes five boxes of cigars beer liquor cash from pool tables a cash register and a jukebox totaling over $2,000.
In New York the John N. Mitchell and Maurice Stans trial stalls over jury pool for the first cabinet member prosecutions since Teapot Dome. Mitchell, 60, once Nixon's attorney general and campaign director, and Stans, 65, Nixon fundraiser and commerce secretary, face conspiracy obstruction of justice and false statements over a $200,000 Vesco contribution.
Highland High School named new members to the National Honor Society during a morning assembly led by Leanne Swailes, president of the Highland chapter. Seniors Mike Lord Connie Armbruster Debbie Bulger Kathy Kenney Virginia Yoder Nancy Wood. Juniors Penny Frank Beth Strabala Karen Krotz. Sophomores Dan Fox Donna Thomann. Former members Leanne Swailes Randy Davis Carol Dann Betty Rice Jane Waldschmidt also participated along with Lisa Hennon Holly Ost Maureen Scherrer.
Barrow show at Washington Livestock Auction drew 65 open class entries and four truck lot entries. Overall champion owned by Daryl Owens, reserve by Gipple Farms. Lightweight winners: Donald Lukovsky, Duane K Miller, Steve Settles, Ronnie Davis, Roger Stutsman. Heavyweight top: Daryl Owens, Gipple Farms, Ed Zieglowsky, John F. O Connor, Steve Settles. Judge Roger Bottema. Trophies donated by Federal Land Bank of Washington and Wilson Concrete. Winners to be announced at March 9 banquet.
Des Moines Iowa. The Iowa State Bar Association refused Attorney General Richard Turners request to convene an emergency meeting on sweeping criminal code reforms arguing insufficient time before next weeks Iowa Senate debate. Turner calls the bill the most important issue in a century and warns it could overturn thousands of past criminal court decisions. Senate leaders say the measure must be voted up or down this session despite Turners push for further study.
District Court Judge Ira F. Morrison reduced Kalona sewer assessments against two property owners, Ivo E. Grady and Earl Yoder. Grady's charges fell from 1485 to 500 and 1200 to 600, Yoder's from 2055 to 525. Interest starts from original filing date. Kalona pays court costs. Plaintiffs argued improvements did not benefit the properties.
Des Moines reports Governor Robert D. Ray announced at his morning news conference that he will seek an unprecedented fourth term. He cited his record since 1968 and said he would run if the people show confidence, noting polls show strong approval and his history as a leading GOP figure.
Orr Mapel 93 of 608 South Third Avenue Washington was killed when his westbound car failed to stop at Highway 1 intersecting G 26 and was hit by a southbound car driven by Albert Melvin Carson of Town City. Mapel and Carson were injured and taken to Washington County Hospital. Mapel born January 24 1881 near Wellman was married to Alma Sigler Mapel with surviving wife daughter James Murphy, two grandchildren, six great grandchildren and a brother Samuel Mapel. Funeral Friday at 1 30 p m at Jones Funeral Home with burial in Taylor Cemetery.
Former Texas governor John Connally told 1400 Lincoln Day Dinner attendees in Iowa the 1974 elections can be favorable for Republicans despite Watergate. He defended Nixon, urged issue by issue campaigning, and said a 1976 presidential bid remains uncertain while predicting good congressional odds if voters reject broad guilt by association. Connally warned against dwelling on Watergate and said impeachment would be warranted only with sufficient grounds.
Rocky Lee Scott aged 22 and Teddy James TeBockhurst aged 19 pleaded guilty in district court to concealing stolen goods from a sheriff’s posse raid on a farmhouse near West Chester. Judge Morrison set sentencing for March 15 and ordered pre-sentence investigations. Scott also admitted possession of marijuana and faces a March 45 sentencing while denying concealed weapon charges with trial set for March 4. TeBockhurst denied possession of a controlled substance with no trial date yet. Other defendants include Norvella LaRue McCulley and Greggory James Karr. McCulley’s charge was dismissed and Karr awaits arraignment.

A 33 year old Harvard Law School graduate Jon Leibowitz was arrested in New York on forgery burglary and grand larceny charges for stealing 607000 in securities. Police say he sought the securities as a challenge after netting about 200000 from a prior scheme. He owns a condo at 860 United Nations Plaza and co owns Phombus Films. He did not practice law. The case details a multi step plan involving bank stock information a brokerage firm and an unnamed co tenant. A four month police probe led to his arrest on Tuesday.
Margaret N. Keyes, associate professor of home economics at the University of Iowa, will speak at the annual Washington County Historical Society dinner meeting on Thursday evening. Those attending should reserve seats now if not yet arranged.
