Work to Restore Telephone Service After Ice Storm
More than 1,000 linemen from telephone and power firms continued repairs after a severe ice and snow storm as towns face long distance outages. Northwestern Bell expects some long distance service to resume by Tuesday night with rural lines possibly through Thursday. Iowa Power & Light says central Iowa customers should have service by tonight. At the storm’s peak 1,100 long distance lines failed and about 600 remain down. 107 exchanges were cut off but reduced to about 40 by mid morning. Winterset was among the hardest hit towns with eight to ten exchanges still offline tomorrow. In St Louis, John Fisher notes earthmoving and pre excavation surveys can cut costs up to 23 percent in the building industry.
