Flying canoe causes crash in Evanston

Evanston Illinois police report Chorge Bates 37 a telephone company worker was struck by a 16 foot canoe torn free by strong winds from the car of Doug las Swihart 17. The canoe sailed through Bates windshield hitting his head and shoulders.

Burglarized Green Mountain Bank in Iowa

Burglars shattered into the Produ cers Savings Bank at Green Mountain Iowa breaking a rear window and using an acetylene torch to access the vault. About 30 safety deposit boxes were rifled with at most roughly $500 in receipts missing. The breakin occurred after 10 p.m. Sunday. state investigators and the sheriff were summoned.

Fred Juzeler 91 Dies Here After Three Week Illness

Fred Juzeler 91 of 821 North Second Avenue died at 8 30 p m Sunday in the hospital after a three week illness. Funeral services are set for 2 p m Wednesday Feb 20 at Jones Funeral Home with Dr William J Grossheim in charge. Burial will be in Elm Grove Cemetery. Iowa records grim weekend toll in traffic crashes

Thirteen killed in Iowa over the weekend marking the bloodiest period of the year and raising the 1957 toll to 66. Friday night and Saturday losses prompted Safety Commissioner Clinton Moyer to warn of a looming Sunday hazard as clear weather tempts high speeds. One victim, 57 year old George McMann of Davenport, died Friday night.

Missouri Tragedy at Warren County Home for the Aged

Fire and explosion trapped 71 residents in a Warren County three story building in Warrenton Missouri. Forty bodies were recovered and officials expect no survivors as debris cooled after the blaze. Witnesses blamed a gas ignition and the fire occurred during visiting hours with over 225 people inside.

Longshore Strike Ends With Proposed Three Year Pact

In New York the International Longshoremen's Association and the New York Shipping Association announced a tentative three year agreement ending a five day walkout by 45 000 longshoremen from Maine to Virginia. The pact retroactive to Oct 11 1956 raises wages 32 cents hourly with 18 cents the first year and seven cents in each of the next two years expiring Sept 30 1959. Subcommittees will finalize contracts for carpenters checkers and other crafts as union members consider ratification and a possible return to work today.

Fire Destroys Kalona Area Home of John Stutzman

The Stutzman farm home five miles north of Kalona was destroyed by a 2:45 a.m. Sunday blaze. Neighbors alerted the family as four children aged 6 to 13 slept upstairs and escaped safely with Harold 4 on the first floor. Firemen limited damage to remaining structures and salvaged some furnishings and clothing. The house valued about 16000 with partial insurance.

Mrs. Ethel Krieger 70 died suddenly at 6 30 a m today at sister Madge O Neil home in Columbus Junction where she had lived since 1949. She was an organist at a funeral Sunday. Services are at Stephens Funeral Home Columbus Junction 2 p m Wednesday with Rev George Pennington. burial in Seymour Iowa. She will be buried at a Seymour cemetery after services at Liggett Funeral Home Thursday 1 30 p m. She was born Ethel Varney in Decatur County daughter of John Varney and Mattie Powers. She married Howard Krieger in 1906 and lived in Chicago until his death in 1949. Survivors include one sister one niece and two nephews.

Homer M. Smith 86 Dies at Mercy Hospital Iowa City

Homer Myron Smith aged 86 died at 1 p.m. Saturday in Mercy Hospital Iowa City. He lived with his niece Mrs. B C Briley for 10 years and will be buried at Elm Grove Cemetery after a funeral at 2 p.m. Tuesday Feb 19. Born April 2, 1870 in Washington he was salutatorian of the 1888 Washington High School class and spent forty years in Kansas as a farmer and Swift & Co. employee. active in the Kansas Grange. He was the last of his immediate family with several nieces and nephews surviving.

About 750 commanders adjutants and service officers of the Iowa American Legion attended the annual leaders conference in Des Moines. Small Iowa towns protest reorganization bill in Des Moines

Scores of citizens from Owasa Battle Creek Cushing Galva Steamboat Rock New Market and Linn Grove gathered in Des Moines to oppose a Senate approved measure forcing small districts to merge into 500 student units for a special aid form. One Injured in Crash Near Junction Today

Billy Haines of Davenport was taken by ambulance to Muscatine General Hospital after a two car crash one mile east of Columbus Junction on highway 92 at the Fredonia junction. Haines had a deep forehead gash and bruises. both cars were heavily damaged.

Two Car Crash Near Kalona Saturday Report

Amelius Marion Bash of Kalona route 2 and Ernest Frank Koepfer of Kalona route 3 were in a two vehicle collision 7 15 p m Saturday two and one half miles south of Kalona at the junction of highway 1 and Richmond road. The Koepfer car traveling west on Richmond road turning onto highway 1 was rear ended by the Eash vehicle. Neither driver was seriously injured but the Koepfer car was a total loss and the Eash car sustained extensive front end damage.

Local Guard Unit to Join One Day Recruiting Drive

Washington's National Guard units will enlist ten new members in a nationwide drive on Saturday February 23.
