Report says Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek and Premier T V Soong asked permission to dump about 200 million dollars of UNRRA aid into the Chinese black market to raise cash and prevent economic collapse. UNRRA officials viewed the plan as alarming and contrary to aid principles.
Heiress Barbara Hutton reportedly plans to marry Prince Igor Trubetskei as her fourth husband in St Moritz Switzerland. The wedding date awaits a French marriage license linked to the Prince’s naturalization case, with Hutton set to regain princess status.
A marriage license was issued at the courthouse yesterday to Duane Lewis Wade of Wellman and Patricia Lorraine Swift of Ainsworth.
The Iowa rural young peoples assembly will open a three day meeting in Des Moines February 21 with about 200 delegates from 33 Junior Farm Bureau and rural youth groups. President Bill Stillman will preside. speakers include Mrs. Raymond Sayre Kirk Fox Carlyle De La Croix P C Taft Dr Alfred Haake and Roger Fleming. Fleming will discuss the legislature and lead a State house tour.
Suburban Westwood High students who ousted the superintendent and sought the new leader returned to classes after a grand jury was promised to probe the school board finances and the board's competence. They voted to resume school while pressuring acting superintendent Laurence Phelps to be fired.

Altoona Iowa February 18 The Pennsylvania railroad Red Arrow Express plunged from a mountain track killing seventeen and injuring about eighty five as it tumbled down a steep embankment. Rescue crews worked through wreckage to reach the injured while hospitals filled and rail officials investigated the cause.
A kitchen fire at 12 15 today in the Floyd E Sturgis residence 621 West Washington street started from an electric refrigerator motor. Firemen used booster-tank water to extinguish the blaze in minutes. The home sustained smoke damage to walls curtains and contents with the refrigerator destroyed. insurance covers the loss.
A three alarm blaze at the Trey laundry in downtown Des Moines caused an estimated $150000 in damage after twelve fire companies fought the fire for nearly four hours. Owner Earl Corbin put building losses at $40000 and equipment losses at $90000. Relief night watchman Bob Kinsley discovered the fire. (includes passenger injuries and train diversions).
Mayor R L Lytle and councilmen Warry Montgomery Frank Mc Farlane and Will Dupuis toured the tri cities to advance garbage collection and disposal plans for Washington. They reported tentative purchase of a large steel tank to mount on a city truck, aiming for improved city owned collection and later an enhanced disposal system. A municipal airport lease was signed with Fred Minden and William Chmelar for over two years, with Minden taking over management and future expansion rights. The council also authorized another utility truck for the street department to meet various needs.
The sheriff lists 22 individuals in Washington Iowa who have not received driver licenses due to incorrect addresses or moves. Licenses were mailed from Des Moines and returned undeliverable. recipients may claim them at the courthouse or by writing to the sheriff.
