Des Moines February 18 The Iowa legislature moves toward a repeal vote as national action on repeal nears. Representative Hartman of Des Moines county backs a ratification bill while a companion proposal may legalize intoxicants locally with beer options and tighter controls. The senate settled a contested election for Mahaska county in four hours.
Dean Harland Mead announced district tournament entries from eastern Iowa teams including Burlington Muscatine Washington and Lenox Hopkinton to decide two state berths in Iowa City March 4 10. Washington junior college fell 36 30 to Burlington as Doyle and Higby rallied the hosts while Washington had hoped to clinch the conference lead.

Washington defeated Brighton 48-14 to reach the final, while West Chester beat Ainsworth 35-15 to set the championship night. A consolation game features Ainsworth against Brighton at 7:30 followed by the title battle at 8:30.
Miami February reports say Mayor Anton Cermak improves after being shot. Giuseppe Zangara awaits arraignment on four charges. prosecutors consider maximum eighty year sentence if he pleads guilty, or insanity defense if his counsel requests.
In Washington on February 15 the Republican wets in the house held a caucus and pledged to vote for the Blaine prohibition repeal resolution when it reaches the house next Monday. Over 90 anti prohibitionists join with the Democratic majority to push repeal back to the states. The fate of repeal hinges on states as the house is expected to pass the Blaine amendment by 10 to 20 votes. Secretary Stimson will certify to the states in the coming days. No action by President Hoover is required.
About 1200 people filled the Memorial Union last night to hear the Little Symphony Orchestra of Chicago conducted by George Dasek with University guest conductor Philip Greeley Clapp. The program featured Clapp’s piece A Highly Academic Diversion on Seven Notes with four movements and a humorous Rondo Afternoon Tea that drew repeated cries from the audience.

Burlington Iowa February 18 193? The city council secured a lease on a rock quarry to aid the unemployed. About 100 men will be put to work Tuesday when the crusher is installed. The first rock will form a runway at the municipal airport financed by an RFC loan.
Former Panora Iowa resident today received a third death sentence for the murder of a street car conductor. The execution date was set for April 21.
Ralph C. Scott, a Washington furniture dealer, was elected president of the Better Washington club for the coming year at yesterday's annual election. Richard Johnson became vice president, C. V. Crulch was re elected secretary and Frank Kos treasurer. The vote was by acclamation on nominating committee report led by I. Rothschild.
The Washington county high school declamatory contest will be held Monday night at Ainsworth with eight schools entered. Washington’s Margaret Griffith will represent the school. The Ainsworth girls glee club under Miss Kathleen Coffey will perform Polish Lullaby A Little Girl with a Curl and Mendelssohn On the Wings of Song. Paul Mahin will play a trombone solo with his mother Mrs Dr Mahin accompanying. Admission is ten and fifteen cents. The humorous and oratorical divisions will be at Brighton Wednesday night.
