Within the Moscow Kremlin a bomb under Grand Duke Sergius’s carriage wounds him fatally wounded, two assassins captured, one reported badly hurt. Two witnesses, policemen nearby, observed the blast as guards and priests kept vigil at Shoudoff monastery through the night.
An assassin fleeing the scene was captured without using his revolver. He admitted ties to the socialist revolutionary party but refused to name himself. The bomb thrower was wounded and uncaring, declaring he had done his job as the Grand Duke’s head was blown apart. Grand Duchess Elizabeth, at the Kremlin, tended to wounded at the front and awaited a governor general visit as the blast occurred. The autocratic state faces renewed terrorist pressure from Nihilist-linked radicals.
Dun & Co. reports weather still controls the trade picture with low temps and heavy snow hindering distribution and freight movement. Retail activity falters while winter goods see rising demand, signaling tighter supplies at season end. Despite soft trade, confidence in the future remains, with spring and summer preparations under way, though transit blockades limit fuel and other shipments. Failures: 258 in U S, 32 in Canada, vs 287 and 20 last year.

Passenger total 53148108 and railroad employment 105700 up 2405. payroll 70810.60 up 7 135795 over 1908. fatalities 25 passengers and 326 employees with 462 injured and 2800 others.
Bedford Indiana February 18 Judge Wilson summons the Lawrence circuit court grand jury for Monday to investigate Elmer Browning’s alleged confession in the 1904 murder of Miss Sarah Schafer. Deputy Prosecutor Fletcher and attorney John H Underwood say new circumstantial evidence will be presented. Underwood may testify.
Paris Feb 18 Game Warden A W Owen reports the State Game Commission has allotted 50 to appeal to Edgar county farmers to feed quail and prairie chickens amid the extreme cold. Several farmers have been hired to spread corn and small grain for the birds.
Terre Haute Indiana February 18 Zeno Vandover Indiana normal student held on theft charges was acquitted at the preliminary hearing. Police had found pocketbooks and 10 locker keys in his room and Vandover had been accused of stealing towels. Fellow student Lewis Phillips, accused of sharing stolen money with Vandover, was also acquitted.
Charles E. Shively of Richmond supreme chancellor of the Knights of Pythias designs to establish several lodges in London. At present no lodges exist outside U S controlled territory except in southern Canada.
After a severe arraignment by Senator Campbell who urged impeachment the West Virginia senate adopted a resolution to investigate Governor White and appointed a committee to conduct the inquiry.
A Missouri Pacific passenger train derailed in Knobnoster in the yards delaying services. Cars stayed upright and no injuries were reported. The incident affected multiple coaches and prompted immediate repair work.
To bypass Lake Baikal and speed the Transsiberian route Russia built a new line along the lake. The project required fifty miles of track thirty eight tunnels and thirteen covered galleries. Each tunnel was lined with masonry due to rock conditions and guards monitor tunnel entrances.
In Springdale near Boyne City Michigan on February 18 a blaze killed three children who were asleep on the second floor. Their father Frank Pearsons was severely burned and frozen while lighting the fire and attempting a rescue and faces probable death.

New York Feb 18 The American League of Base Ball Clubs refused the National Base Ball associations proposed amendment to raise payments by the two major leagues for players drafted from minor league teams.
In a long standing custom the Tract Society presented Bibles to the members of the graduating class at the military academy. The ceremony took place at a special service in the Cullum Memorial hall at West Point on February 18.

The charges expanded after Stella Lula's acquittal as Mrs Lita supported by Chicago detectives jailed Mrs Charles Buck of South Row now in LaPorte County custody. Buck testified as Miss Bouchere and says Mayor Darrow paid her to commit perjury in the Lula case and plans to be indicted on her confession.
