Police report thieves loaded about 7 000 bricks weighing four pounds each, totaling 16 tons, from a branch supply firm. J C Cornillie of Detroit valued the bricks at 420 dollars and estimated five hours to load them.
Saudi Arabia protests a U S ban blocking 18 tanks. Ambassador Abdullah Al Khayyal seeks details from Assistant Secretary George V Allen after an emergency State Department meeting. Britain continues arms shipments while U S studies the Middle East arms policy and regional reactions.
Four youths and women died when a car rear ended a semi on a slick highway five miles southeast of Glenwood Iowa. The car struck the trailer after the truck jackknifed while returning from a Sidney high school game. Rescue workers spent about two hours freeing occupants.
Charles B. Shuman, president of the American Farm Bureau Federation, accuses the Senate Agriculture Committee of threatening sound farm policy by restoring 90 percent parity supports for cotton, corn, peanuts and wheat. He warns election year demagoguery could derail a national farm program and urges soil bank participation to channel acres from controlled crops.
West Chester High School Freshman Home Economics class led by Mrs. Small treated the school board to dinner on Wednesday evening. The event featured culinary displays and entertainment contests with attendees including Mr. and Mrs. Barker, Klopfenstein, Sherman, Bauer, Mangold, Dusenberg and McDowell.

Mrs Lonnie C Baker 82 died at 4 10 p m Thursday after a five month illness at 915 West Madison Street. She lived in West Chester before moving to Washington ten years ago. Survivors include husband two sons and five daughters, three stepchildren, twenty grandchildren and 33 great grandchildren. Also a brother D A Foxx of Oelwein. Preceded by parents eight brothers and sisters.
Washington based talks aim to resume negotiations in the 124 day Westinghouse Electric strike. Union and company officials will attend at the urging of Federal Mediation Director Joseph Finnegan. Time study issues to be handled, with potential 90 day return to work pending settlement.
Donald Frederick Ballou 25 of Oskaloosa died when his car collided head on with a semi on Iowa 163 near Pella Marion County. Road was slick at the time. Joyce Van Dyke of Pella injured and hospitalized at Mahaska County Hospital. Truck driver not seriously hurt.
Nomination papers were circulated for Richard Ross of Washington and Vernon Fletcher of Crawfordsville as candidates for the Republican nomination for two Washington County Hospital board seats in the June primary. Incumbents Harold Miller of Crawfordsville and Mrs. Dave Livingston of Washington have terms expiring. Miller has indicated he will not seek re election.
Voters in Nora Springs Floyd Cerro Gordo and Mitchell counties turned down a 220000 dollar school bond issue for a high school. The tally was 431 yes 341 no short of the 60 percent threshold required to pass the measure.
Weather warnings spread across the South for possible tornadoes after Aberdeen Mississippi was struck killing one and injuring fifty. Snow sleet and freezing rain snarled the North and Midwest with blizzard conditions in Milwaukee and freezing drizzle in Wisconsin while Chicago faced delayed trains and numerous minor accidents.
Graveside rites for infant Kiven Kirk Kelly son of Mr and Mrs Leighton Kelly of Washington were at 3 p m in Elm Grove cemetery with Dr Walter Scheuermann in charge. Born Thursday night he leaves a sister Bonnie and grandparents Roy and Mrs Steele and Magdaline Kelly Astrath. Jones Funeral Home handled arrangements.
Des Moines investigators pursue a full arson probe after two spectacular fires that day killed seven people and caused about one million dollars in damage. Firemen Dorman Johnson and Stanley Peterson died inside the John Deere warehouse when a brick wall collapsed. other victims included a mother, three children, and a neighbor girl in a Fort Des Moines apartment building. Authorities fear a single arsonist possibly connected to four other fires within 12 hours. Sheriff Hildreth and Fire Marshal Herron urged residents to provide information as snow covered the scene.
Graveside services will be held at Highland cemetery Richland at 2 p.m. Sunday for Mrs. Jesse Irwin 63 former Richland resident. The Rev. Raymond Walker will conduct the services. Mrs. Irwin died Friday Feb 10 in Bradenton Florida and her body lies in state at Gould Funeral Home Richland until services.
Funeral services for Mrs. Emma Spring who died here Thursday are set for 2 p.m. Saturday at Sherman’s Funeral Home. Rev. Earl Longfellow will preside and burial will follow in Elm Grove cemetery.
Pvt. Sidney Ray Sparks of Tennille Georgia, held for four years after fleeing to seek political asylum, was released by Soviet authorities in Berlin and handed to U S officials. Sparks said he was healthy and would face return to guardhouse to await trial if fit. His mother expressed relief that he is back in American custody.
The Washington Chamber of Commerce retail sales committee reviewed plans for 1956 at a meeting hosted by Miss Clarice Meek. They discussed promotions tied to events like the county fair and clean up week, with dates set for sales events and a special Jaycees Trade Show March 13 and 14 at the Armory.
WO Glenn Murphy announced a 19 enlistment quota for the National Guard recruiting day at the armory this Saturday. The top 12 recruiters will be flown to Washington, D.C. on an all expenses paid trip. The public is invited to an all day open house with training, equipment displays, a continuing movie, coffee and donuts.
