Washington firemen answered a Friday night call to extinguish a fire built inside a hollow tree on the junior high school grounds. The prank, repeated on prior occasions, involved lighting a fire within the tree.
Washington County courthouse will close all day Monday February 18 for Washington's birthday. Other state and federal offices and some businesses will also close. The Iowa House debated whether cosmetologists should cut men's hair but deferred action to file clarifying amendments. A Des Moines judge ruled licensed cosmetologists can cut men’s hair while a Woodbury County judge ruled they cannot. Lawmakers called the bill hairy as it pits them against special interest groups.
Secretary of State Henry Kissinger said conditions seem likely for an embargo end after talks in Arkansas with J William Fulbright about a weekend meeting with Egypt and Saudi Arabia. He praised the 13 nation energy conference outcome and stressed energy issues require international cooperation.

FBI officials said progress is being made in locating Patricia Hearst, the 19 year old kidnapped by the Symbionese Liberation Army. Agent in charge Charles Bates declined to reveal specifics, citing safety concerns and ongoing investigations. Two suspects, Donald DeFreeze and Theron Wheeler, are linked to the case, with Bates noting broad inquiry across associates and possible others.
Vice President Gerald R Ford told 900 Nebraska Republicans that he does not want the presidency or another term as vice president while praising Nixon era achievements. He attributed foreign policy gains to Nixon and Kissinger and blamed domestic setbacks on a Democratic Congress, calling overseas critics isolationists.

DPI reviews desegregation proposals from Des Moines and Davenport as guidelines tighten to curb minority isolation. Des Moines pushes expanded open enrollment and community input, while Davenport balks at open enrollment and bus plans amid local resistance.
Comptroller General Elmer Staats told the Treasury he will block any further federal funding for Secret Service protection of former Vice President Spiro Agnew. He warned future payments will be disallowed and that the cutters begin Monday. Agnew resigned Oct 10 amid tax evasion charges and had received 24/7 protection.
