Cafe proprietor Van Xarras wins a strange tale of his car being stolen twice in three days. The vehicle disappeared in Fitchburg Saturday night, appeared in Leominster Sunday, and later turned up in Boston Monday after another theft.
A 30-person group from the Washington county Soil Conservation Service and local officials toured farms in Crawford Washington Jackson Highland and Oregon townships to view gully control and waterway projects. They noted heavy ASC funded assistance typically 30 to 40 percent on eligible projects up to 1500 and strong county cooperation with the board of supervisors and engineer.
The Paul Palmers of Osceola Iowa have seven daughters ages 20 months to 12 years and expect an eighth child in March. They may soon hold the state record for largest all girl family in Iowa.

Iowa lawmakers eyed new revenue options as House Ways and Means heard a study noting a $5 filing fee on state income tax returns could raise about 3 million dollars annually while a 3 cent sales tax on most items would bring 16 to 17 million dollars. Louis Cook of the State Tax Commission outlined potential gains and countervailing losses, and a bill to revert to the pre 1953 full income tax base was discussed. The House Cities and Towns Committee also advanced eight municipalities bills and backed a measure to cap firemen’s work at 68 hours weekly amid reports of 80 hour weeks.
Three anti Red men who seized the Romanian legation in Bern and held out for more than 40 hours surrendered to Swiss authorities after a priest’s pleas. They faced extradition and would be tried in Switzerland for the legation chauffeur’s slaying.
A public quiz sponsored by the YWCA and civic groups in Washington asked residents if fire insurance rates were low for their town. About 150 answered yes, 50 no, 77 no answer. The Iowa Inspection Bureau Town Index rated Washington as average with a score of 6, Muscatine being the only town rated lower.
John C. Murray, a two year staff member at Jones funeral home in Washington, resigns and leaves March 1 for Greenfield. He buys a partnership in Bickford funeral home there. Mrs. Murray, employed at Tom Duncans Store for Women, will join March 15. daughter Tamara stays.
City hostess greets three newcomer families for the Chamber of Commerce in Washington. The Pollocks from West Liberty reside at 81 South Iowa Avenue and have five children. Mr Pollock works as flock supervisor for Chemnell Hatchery in Gainesville. The Simpsons live at 800 North Fourth Avenue with Lois Ayers as wife. he works at Eclipse Lumber in Lone Tree. The Holmeses move from Bethel to 617 North Avenue C after farming 34 years.
Des Moines Iowa House committee killed a bill 27 to 10 proposing a four lane east west freeway across Iowa funded by extending the current one cent gas tax. Rep. Carl Ringgenberg said Iowans need wider two lane highways instead. Rep. Emil Novak introduced the bill. A toll road option was not acted on.

New York AP. Assistant District Attorney Alexander Herman disclosed that the Rubinstein murder was a bungled kidnapping by underworld figures. Chauffeur Herman Scholz testified the accused abductors planned a ransom scheme, but strangled Rubinstein by mistake, prompting fears for Scholz’s safety. Bail set at 925000.
An explosion caused by a gas main leak damaged a new Ames basement and one bedroom Tuesday night. Three people were injured including Mrs. Warren Antour in fair condition and Jake Wilson in good condition. Wilson and gas company employee Herb Christy were repairing a leak when the blast occurred. Christy had minor injuries. Firefighters put out a fire that followed the explosion.
Mr andMrs Edmund Anderson and family from Waukon travel in a converted Greyhound bus that serves as their mobile home. They purchased the bus at Sparta and remodeled it into comfortable living quarters.
Marvin Carter, manager of the Washington Benner store, is named a Good Citizen Award winner in a national program by the National Association of Food Chains. He joined Benner Tea in 1945 and has held several managerial posts, active in community service groups and local welfare efforts.
Paris reports the powerful right wing of the National Assembly joined independents in opposing Socialist Christian Pineau's bid to form a new government. With 226 of 626 seats against him the plan to become premier faltered as he planned to address the assembly and meet Coty.
Eleanor Roosevelt warned Americans to study communism and its global impact. Speaking at Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls she said the United States leads in production, military strength, and economy but must deepen spiritual and moral leadership to face the Soviet ideological challenge.
Chicago business executive Charles E. King says he has 45 000 to 50 000 proxy votes toward gaining control of the Automatic Washer Co at Newton Iowa. A 50 000 to 60 000 vote majority is needed for the March 22 directors meeting, with King noting his plant visit justified a change in management.
Boston police captain and Patrolman John M. observed two men fleeing a tavern. One claimed a cut hand while investigators learned they had just robbed the place and confessed. The incident showcases swift police work and an arrest following the incident.
