Communist headquarters claim two nationalist armies renewed the civil war with a major attack southwest of Mukden in Manchuria overthrowing Panshan and Taian. Manchurians in Chungking rally, demanding Russian withdrawal and strict Soviet adherence to treaties while preserving Chinese territorial integrity.
About 150 to 200 chicks suffocated in a brooder house fire at the Joe M. Wolfe place on East Washington Street. The blaze started from a stove and smoke suffocated the birds. firefighters arrived, and the building sustained only light damage to the floor.
Iowa case details Marion Leven Taylor alias Sergeant O Leary a radio repairman from Oelwein arrested in Fort Madison connection to the Iowa reform school hoax. He pleaded guilty to embezzlement and faces five years in prison after posing as an army recruiter and duping 35 boys at Eldora training school. He previously received a federal reformatory sentence for impersonating an officer and has a long record of larceny desertion forgery and impersonation.
About one tenth of United Farm Equipment workers resumed duties at the La Plant Cheat Co in Cedar Rapids Iowa three months after striking. Labor conciliator Walter White of Des Moines said terms were reached but details remain undisclosed pending a joint statement. The plant makes road building machinery.
The navy fixed May 15 for its first atomic bomb tests on ships with a second test planned for Bikini Atoll in July and a third underwater test in 1947. Skeptics like Maj. Alexander P. Seversky doubt the tests will show full weapon impact, while atom scientists argue cities could suffer enormous damage. Pilotless drone planes will be tested to study radioactivity and effects on aircraft.
The Otoe canning plant branch in Hamburg Iowa closed today due to tin can shortages. The Home plant at Nebraska City has only about one week of supply. About 500 workers are employed at the two plants.

Washington February 16 UP testimony on Roosevelt expected war after Japan's final diplomatic note raised new Pearl Harbor questions. Commander Schulz described delivering 13 parts to the president and Hopkins who agreed the note meant war. Roosevelt reportedly said this means war and ruled out striking first as not possible for a peaceful democracy.
Des Moines reports Lloyd S. Aiford vice chair of the Agricultural Policy Committee of the National Association of Manufacturers declares price ceilings strangling agriculture and industry alike. He says wartime ceilings were useful but are unrealistic now, hindering recovery and inflation remedies. Also Ed ward O Neal of the American Farm Bureau and E A Eckert of the National Grange urge removal of subsidies and a fairer price system to end dependence on government checks and foster true production.
The Leon Beatty Post of the American Legion completed a membership drive with at least 470 members, more than double its quota and matching other Washington county posts. John Owen, the membership chairman, urges captains to submit all applications for a final tally. The post leaders plan to attend the commanders and adjutants meeting at Des Moines on the 17th and 18th of the month.
Ames Iowa February 16 1950 UPS Continuing efforts of Iowa State college authorities to handle present and expected enrollment have resulted in the promise of 150 more trailer units B H H Platt business manager announced He said that government leasing authorities have approved the schools request for 150 additional units A contract for 50 of the units already has been set The first group will include 40 standard trailers and 10 expansibles At present 145 of the first 150 units are on the campus with occupants in 136 of them When all trailers are delivered Pamela Court will be un village of 300 trailer homes.
Newark, Feb 16. A department store sale of men’s white shirts drew about 1,000 women who formed a near riot to buy them. Inside, veteran S Set. Rocco Marucci was asked if he would buy a shirt and replied, Hell no, send my aunt in there.
The Washington county VFW post votes to sponsor a Crowell-Collier drive and buy wheel chairs from proceeds for local citizens. Chairs from Capper Publications last summer are in use and loaned free. Adjutant Radda outlines candidate lists for officer elections upcoming March 1 at the regular meeting. A $40 check to the post’s ritual team and a $10,000 donation to the National VFW Auxiliary home fund are noted.
Patton urged directing surplus commodities to areas of need using compensatory payments. He argued these payments would bridge the gap between a minimum price and an adequate return to farmers for capital, labor, and know-how.

GM and UAW leaders met in a bargaining session with R. J. Thomas in attendance. the steel deadlock settlement was cited as aiding wage disputes across steel dependent industries.
Six men charged after a stockyards gambling raid last Sunday paid fines. Two more defendants have not yet appeared in justice court. Ernie Smith paid 59 dollars plus costs and William Palmer paid 10 dollars plus costs after pleading guilty before Justice J. E. Boyee. Sheriff H. M. Putnam said the remaining two defendants are expected to have hearings soon.
The National Labor Relations Board filed a complaint against Pickwick Co. of Cedar Rapids Iowa based on charges by United Farm Equipment and Metal Workers of America CIO. It alleges threats to close the plant to deter unionization offering favors to nonunion workers and retaliation threats with a February 27 Cedar Rapids hearing.
The United Steel Workers and Republic Steel signed an identical agreement to U S Steel's settlement ending the nationwide strike of about 750,000 steel workers. The deal includes 18.5 cents per hour raise and maintains union membership and dues check off. Negotiations with Bethlehem Steel Inland Steel and others continue, aiming to end the walkout across the industry.
