Mrs Ray Bachman aged 31 vanished after leaving home in Eldora to shop leaving behind two children aged 4 and 6. Her husband a mechanic urged the sheriff to launch a search for his wife as authorities investigate the disappearance.
Dr. Paul Stephen of the Iowa Health department collected blood in Sioux City from 27 scarlet fever convalescents to use as serum for treatment. Donors were paid 5 dollars per pint.
A one day flight over flood zones in the Mississippi basin was completed by three Iowa City men Dr J D Wells of the college of dentistry Charles Mitchell student and Paul Shaw. They departed Saturday afternoon in Shaw s airplane and returned to Iowa City Sunday.
Clarence Will of Fort Dodge filed a $2000 suit against James Huebsch, the former Fort Dodge chief of police ousted recently. Will alleges mistreatment during third degree questioning by Fort Dodge police caused permanent injury.
Bedford farmer Bedford-Glen Gillett, 34, was released on bond after state and county officers uncovered a still buried in a straw stack on his farm. Liquor was found in half-gallon jars hidden in a small toolhouse on the premises.
A conference will be held between E N Peak president of the Rural Development Corp Marshalltown and electric line subscribers of Wapello and Jefferson counties. Farmers in northeast Wapello and western Jefferson counties have protested high rates using candies and lanterns to fight their homes.

Des Moines reports that of 24 million dollars released in Iowa for veterans' bonuses only seven percent was untraceable. A survey of half the payments shows 65 percent spent on groceries, coal and household costs, 20 percent on life insurance and securities, and 8 percent on automobiles.
Two men were burned when an oil station explosion sparked a fire in Algona. Fire units battled the blaze as injuries were reported and a preliminary investigation began.
Iowa Democratic leaders urged seating for R. G. Moore of Dunlap after a Logan precinct dispute. A GOP minority protested counting the contested Logan votes, arguing the outcome would be Peyton 5 412 to Moore 5 080 under the Democratic majority plan.
Washington February 16 The Roosevelt plan to enlarge the supreme court faces possible delay as a judiciary subcommittee favors the retirement bill allowing justices to retire with full pay at 70. Senator Borah voices opposition to the current form proposing a 75 retirement age. Senator McCarran hopes for passage and Senate action next week.
Des Moines reports the Iowa Senate backed higher contempt penalties for courts. The measure raises fines up to 50 dollars and allows six months jail, plus potential Supreme Court fines up to 1000 dollars. prompted by limits on penalizing Norman Baker of Muscatine.
Two workers suffered facial and hand burns while flames burst from a station. Fred Frost, nearby, sustained light burns. The men leaped from the doorway as the blaze erupted, and Barringer called the fire department from a window.

Ella Dereman 65, a former Washington resident, died at 7 45 last evening at her daughter Mrs Irvin Plums home near Winfield after a five month illness. Funeral services set for Thursday at 1 pm at the daughter s home and 2 pm at Wayland Methodist church with burial in the adjacent cemetery. She is survived by her daughter Mrs Palm and sister Mrs Elizabeth Palmer of Marion. husband preceded her in death.

London reports twenty seven nations agreed to ban all volunteers to Spain and to establish a naval cordon by May 6 to block arms and ammunition flows. The move, from the nonintervention conference, follows months of dispute as rebels gain advantage and loyalists in Madrid lose support.

Elkader Iowa Feb 16 ten farmers a livestock buyer and a paper route driver were chosen today for the jury to hear the murder case against the defendant.
The body of Oral M. Sweet, a Washington automobile dealer, was found this afternoon at the Sweet home on East Washington street. He died of a self inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Coroner Dr. W. S. Kyle said death was by his own action and no note was left. Sweet was alone. body moved to L A Jones funeral home and funeral arrangements were not yet made. His brother Keith was out of town.
Des Moines February 16. State Agent Jerry Wood reports another attempt to link Clarence Gift, 37, of Salina California, a lettuce field worker, with the eleven year old murder of an unidentified girl. Frank Robertson, a farmer who saw a man July 24, 1925, the night of the murder, cannot identify Gift. The girl’s body was found in a burned straw stack two weeks later.
W. L. Rukgaber was in Mt. Pleasant on business yesterday. Mrs. Minnie Hine, 49, is the fifth person tried for the murder of Dan Shine, 609.
United States agricultural data show the average cost per bushel for 1935 corn at 70 cents nationwide, with Iowa reporting 49 cents. The report notes land rent seed fertilizer and harvesting costs higher than the national average while per acre costs exceed by a small margin. Labor and land use charges are included in the totals, based on farmer inputs and cash rent valuations.
President Roosevelt urged Congress to act with a four point program to address farm tenancy. Scouts from Troops 32 and 33 of the local Boy Scouts held a district court of honor at the United Presbyterian church last evening. Eight boys earned Tenderfoot ranks, Jack Dankwardt attained First Class, Charles Foster and Charles Fostes received Star ranks, and several earned merit badges. Rotary Club Troop 32 had its charter accepted. Scoutmaster Carleton Haven and Dr A Keith Droz served on the team as leaders. Owen B. Thiel of the Iowa City Area Council led as honorary chairman.
