Muscatine county will pay about 164000 dollars in wages to work relief crews once current projects finish. William Naber, work relief engineer, estimated this Thursday. Thirty one projects employ 664 persons now under way.
The Iowa River rose 6.75 feet in 24 hours reaching 11.3 feet as ice jams at city bridges threatened early Friday. Flood water released upriver increased danger downstream and residents in affected areas were urged to move to higher ground.
Laredo Texas Norman Bakers application to build a radio station at Muscatine was dismissed by the Federal Communications Commission because the cancer hospital operator did not appear to prosecute the case.
Des Moines river flood Friday night endangers the Dayton Stratford bridge thirty miles south of Fort Dodge Iowa as road patrol men report the danger.
Waterloo a 22 year old Damon Pythias act ends with a five month jail term for Damon Davis who stood in for Kenneth Garkow 21 and admitted the liquor involved belonged to him.
State agents and Davenport police with federal tax men raided four downtown taverns late Friday. Liquor valued at about $300 was seized in the coordinated operation.
Mrs. Alma Hoover of Rock Island asks Davenport police to arrest the man who stole her car. Officers locate the vehicle a few hours later and arrest the driver, identified at the station as her husband, Noble Hoover. The Hoovers then drive home.
Manchester resident William J Nieman fights a school board order forcing his daughter Nadine to attend a designated school. A Des Moines Supreme Court stay gives 120 days to file an appeal from a district court ruling upholding the board.
Des Moines LaVerne Clark, administrator of Iowa's personal income tax, notes the mid point of state returns was reached February 14. Incomes under 600 dollars for singles or under 1,200 dollars for married couples are not taxed. The delinquency date is April 1, 1935, and Clark expects many forms with taxes paid to reach the tax board by then.
Clarence M. Moe assistant engineer with the army engineers follows reports of the Macon disaster closely. He worked with Goodyear Zeppelin on the Akron and the Macon projects and doubts structural weakness caused the wreck.
Des Moines reports Lt. Gov Kraschel named two Democratic members M X Geske and Andrew Bell and Republican D W Kimberly to the six member senate committee to investigate the liquor control commission. Rep Gus Alesch accused the probe of being controlled by Kraschel and John Mitchell and urged McKinnon to receive tips. Republican Norman Lundsso said he would inform Speaker Mitchell of the house.
The Cedar Rapids jury convicted Cooper of violating state liquor laws by permitting J Leroy Farmer to possess liquor unlawfully. Judge Ring set February 27 for sentence with motions due February 26. Defense plans to appeal to the Iowa Supreme Court if a new trial is denied.
Comptroller of the Currency O'Connor visits Beverly Hills and endorses the Nebraska plan. He notes states watching, cites a reduced state legislature and counties to cut expenses, calling it a marvelous but hard-to-pass idea. Georgia and Texas constitutional rules are recalled.
Ross Levert, examiner in charge, announced that the final dividend for depositors will be paid next week and the receivership closed. Depositors may call for checks at the former banking room in Alnworth on Monday or Tuesday, February 18 and 19. The 3.074 percent dividend totals about $2,500, completing dividends to 84,074 of deposits. The bank closed October 6, 1931, and this is the county's first completed receivership. The order was signed by Judge J. G. Patterson.

Mrs. Vina Manassier and Mrs. Ted Dalton lead beauty work while Wilson Concrete Co distributes fencing and concrete pipe from its local plant managed by Bob Arthur, a longtime community booster since 1907 and 1931 in Washington.

Two men William Ryan and Jack Stone are held in Peoria charged with a series of box car robberies across Iowa towns. Five cases of women’s shoes were recovered, tied to loot from hits in Rock Island, Iowa City, Fairfield, Mt. Pleasant, and Burlington.
Funeral services for Frank Swickard were held at New Haven Baptist Church conducted by Rev Carl W Klein and Rey Merle LeFever. Pallbearers were Frank Longwell M C DeLong Tom Deal Frat Mangold Frank Mayhew and John Bales. Burial followed in New Haven cemetery.
Nic McCleery and Jack Lytle, both university students, were at home today working in Ni cola and Harmon Stores and Lytle's grocery.
Ervin Robert Swan of Sioux City was found shot to death in a new coupe after it crashed into a tree on a sidewalk. He had prior arrests on narcotics suspicions and was accused of running narcotics from the Minnesota border to Kansas City.
Residents on unsurfaced roads struggle as rains and thawing keep highways impassable. Cars stall in mud, restricting travel and shopping. A Washington man walked three miles after stopping at a farm three miles from a gravel road, while another headed to Haskins and walked along Milwaukee tracks to near home.
Marseilles, February 1640. Paul Codos and Maurice Rossi began a non stop attempt across the South Atlantic seeking a record long flight. They take turns at the controls aiming to extend their own distance record.
About 50 men on part time rolls are hauled daily by the county to Grace Hill quarry west of town for an emergency relief project. Twenty to twenty five men are at work each day, with Roe quarrying this winter to be crushed for county road surfacing. Resident Engineer Henry Vollmer praises the quarry work as successful. Rivers and streams in northeastern Iowa swollen by recent rains and thaws threatened to break from their banks. Warnings were posted in danger zones urging residents to be ready to flee at a moment's notice. Federal meteorologist Charles D. Reed forecast colder unsettled weather, delaying ice break for a day or two.
I A Jones reports from Montrose California that Phoebe Weldin widow of J J Weldin formerly of Washington has died at about 85. Cremation planned with ashes sent to Washington for interment next summer when her nephew visits. She lived most of life near Washington before moving to California five or six years ago and was active in the Second United Presbyterian church.
Services were conducted Friday for William Rice 61 killed by a falling tree at the home of Fred Halgren near Vinton Rice and Halgren were felling the tree.
Bruno Hauptmann was moved to the state penitentiary death row in Trenton as the Lindbergh baby murder case awaits higher court rulings. Sheriff Curtiss delivered the death warrant at 10 32 to the warden amid a 500 person crowd and prison inmates cheering. Hauptmann declared his innocence and noted there is nothing to confess. Four other death row inmates are already awaiting their fate.
Herman Mineke 60 prominent farmer of Kalona died this morning at his home two miles north of town. Death resulted from an infection after a splinter entered his finger about two weeks ago. He is survived by his wife one son Eldon and a brother W S Mineke of near Iowa City. Funeral arrangements incomplete.
George Schaeffers 43 of 2% miles east of Richmond died at 5:36 this morning from acute indigestion after only a few hours of illness. A St. Louis immigrant in 1921, he leaves wife Ona Kleopfer and three children Francis 14 Warren 8 and George Jr 6. Funeral at Holy Trinity church pending Saint Louis confirmation.
