In Acapulco a wooden Flores Theater housing over a thousand burned after a moving pictures film caught fire. Three exits proved insufficient as panic and intense heat roasted many spectators. Hundreds perished, many Americans among the dead, with inquiries to the American consul unanswered.
Acapulco on the Guerrero coast stands as a key Pacific port. It attracts nearly all steamer lines as a port of call and is praised for having the finest harbor in Mexico.
The 18 hour Pennsylvania flyer from Chicago to New York ran into a landslide near Newton Hamilton causing a derailment. One injury was reported: H. H. Mingus baggage man from Jersey City. Train at Altoona two hours late, 45 mph, fog hindered sight. No deaths. fifty-one passengers unhurt, reassigned to Manhattan Limited and continued east.
A 55 year old German shoemaker Carl Eg gert recently arrived from Oshkosh Wisconsin died by his own action in a Pacific avenue hotel. A policeman on a ladder looked through a transom as three others stood nearby when he shot himself through the temple.
Washington dispatch reports twenty one bids for two marble monuments to Confederate soldiers. The war department allotted 6900 dollars per monument and all bids matched the allotment. Eleven bids were for Indianapolis and ten for Alton. Awards to be announced soon.

In Chicago the national baseball commission begins its meeting to publish schedules and handle fan matters. The focus centers on a public feud among Garry Herrmann Harry Pulliam and Charlie Murphy. Murphy defends his bonus offer while facing ticket scalping accusations. Pulliam threatens to reveal internal information about Murphy and manager Frank Chance.
John Mitchell secretary of the National Civic Federation was slightly injured in a trolley car collision while traveling from Spring Valley to New York after visiting his home. He received treatment and continued his trip. Several other people were slightly injured in the accident.
Indianapolis February 16. The central division of the Associated Advertising Cities of America opened a two day convention in Indianapolis with the aim of uniting publicity men from Wisconsin Michigan Illinois Indiana and Ohio and affiliate local clubs with the national organization.
New York February 16 Independent tram and steel firms plan price cuts on many manufactured products except rails. United States Steel Corp official says no reduction is contemplated by that company.
A report to the Senate by Commissioner Charles P. Neill shows telegraph operators earned lower average wages over the past two years and in 1908 compared with 1905. The finding is the salient point of the telegraph business report transmitted to the Senate.
In Grand Forks North Dakota on February 16 a Northern Pacific flyer killed two men named Drew Kruchar a mail carrier and Frank Suta a farmer. The incident occurred after the flyer attacked the victims, leaving authorities to investigate motives and secure the scene.
New York February 16. Actor Raymond Hitchcock files a bankruptcy petition listing assets of 16 dollars and liabilities totaling 28 294 dollars. He reports his abilities as 28 294 and assets as 16 in the filing.
Chicago market report notes estimated hog receipts 19000 with light to heavy grades listed and forward projections. Cattle and sheep volumes, price ranges, and shifting demand show mixed to strong activity with interpretations for packed meat markets and shipments. Washington February 16. The House voted 178 to 117 to pass the bill removing the bar to Knox’s eligibility for secretary of state. A prior vote under suspension failed to reach two-thirds, prompting a rules change to allow a majority vote. Debate centered on constitutional inhibition and political theater.
Report from Los Angeles dated February 16 states Beggs Rocks in the outside channel between Barbara and San Nicolas have sunk into the ocean probably due to an earthquake. Captain Keegan of the schooner Gescilia Sudden reached San Pedro and said the rocks, charted as feet above high tide, were only about four feet above water at near low tide, posing navigation hazards.
Paris Feb 16 Henry Vignaud secretary of the American embassy in Paris has resigned effective March 31 citing advanced age and desire to clear the way for younger men. He is seventy nine and a fund of 20000 has been raised by prominent Americans including Levi P Morton J P Morgan Andrew Carnegie and Ferdinand Blumenthal to support him.
Thomas Ranby, formerly of South Carolina, was fined 100 dollars and jailed six months after conviction for bigamy. He was also ordered to marry an Indian woman, a requirement that made his second marriage void. His first wife had sought a legal remedy upon learning of the marriage to Mary Lear Blackfoot maiden.
