Asphalt concrete praised for city paving at dinner meeting

City council and county officials heard a presentation by Jack Peters of Des Moines on the acceptability and advantages of asphalt concrete for paving streets. A color film showed its use on highways. The program compared asphalt to Portland cement, noting costs of $6.60 per front foot for asphalt versus about £0.20 for Portland concrete in the planned Washington street project.

Fred Crone Dies in California at Ventura Hospital

Fred Crone brother of Frank Crone of the National Bank of Washington died today in Ventura California from a heart attack. He had long worked in banking and visited the community often. He is survived by his wife and funeral plans were not yet announced. Frank Crone is his only brother and the Crone visit to California last November is noted.

First Lenten Service Held in Methodist Chapel

The first in a series of Lenten prayer services was held this morning in the Methodist Church chapel with Mrs Clayde Knapp in charge and Mrs Lloyd Latta assisting. A number of testimonies about experiences with Christ were shared during the meditation period. Services will be held each Wednesday morning during Lent at 8 am under the Washington Council of Churches sponsorship.

Ministers Plan Good Friday Service at Methodist Church

Members of the Washington Ministerial Association met at Win ga's Cafe for breakfast and discussion. They finalized plans for the Good Friday service at 8 p.m. in the Methodist Church and agreed on contributions for special funds and projects before adjourning to the Lenten prayer service at 8 a.m.

Harold Shipton of University Hospitals medical electronics division in Iowa City spoke to the Washington County TV Association on Tuesday. Rex Ray presided at the dinner held at Captain's Table. Kenneth Young was named secretary as the local unit joined the National Association of Television and Electronics Servicemen's Association, NATESA.

Cairo mobs protest Lumumba death and embassies attacked

Egyptian and African students protested Patrice Lumumba's death in Cairo by storming the US library inside the American embassy compound and setting the Belgian embassy afire. They overturned embassy cars and smashed terrace windows while Belgian officials faced demands to haul down the Belgian flag. Police intervened within minutes. no casualties were reported.

Rejected Suitor On Shooting Spree

In Cedar Rapids a rejected suitor shot and killed Denise Sorci and a police officer before killing himself. William Maloy abducted Sorci from Marvin Hanson Jr. and his mother, attempted to take her to his home, then forced her to accompany him. Officers responding to calls were shot at. Barta died from a chest wound on the porch and Driscoll radioed for help while four more shots were fired inside the house. Sorci was found dead in the living room and Maloy lay dead with a temple wound. Hanson and his mother were not harmed.

U S Skating Star Laurence Owen Dies in Belgium Crash

Laurence Owen 16 of Winchester Massachusetts a rising US skating star was killed in the Sabena jet crash near Brussels along with 17 other skaters coaches and family members. The disaster also halted the Prague world championships and devastated the US skating program with four top athletes among the dead.

Iowa House Endorses Reapportionment Plan Amid Senate Doubt

The Iowa House approved a watered down reapportionment bill 73 to 33, aiming at a 56 member Senate by population and 99 member House by county, drawing opposition in the Senate over population changes and cross county lines. Gov. Norman Erbe praised the House action while Senate leaders warned of tough sledding in committee and possible defeat in the chamber.

Scouts Present Jamboree Program At Y’s Men Club

Washington Boy Scouts who attended the national jamboree last summer shared experiences at the Y's Men's Club meeting. Steve Nemmers presided and introduced Ron Gregory Joe McCarthy Dennis Day and Jim Mallory who also showed jamboree photos and described side trips to Colorado. Next week a father and son program is planned.
