Reports circulated of hundreds dead from the Jugoslav earthquake but Zagreb teletypes suggested figures were exaggerated though many fatalities occurred. Belgrade awaited details as militiamen and Red Cross teams rushed into Herzegovina to assess deaths and property damage.
Mrs. Adam Genkinger died yesterday at age 82 after living in the county since birth. Born Patience Pattison February 3, 1845 near Washington, she married Adam Genkinger and lived on a farm before moving to Washington nineteen years ago. Survived by three children George Genkinger Jr. and Mrs Effie Mivers of Clio Town and Jr. Genkinger, plus a sister, seventeen grandchildren and four great grandchildren. funeral Wednesday at 2:30 at Lt Jones funeral home with Rev Dr Bowers officiating. Burial Elm Grove cemetery.
John J. Harvey was sentenced to ten years in the Anamosa reformatory after conviction for automobile theft. His sister Rose appeared before Judge Hermon Zeuch asking to serve the term herself, arguing the defendant alone could be punished for the offense. Harvey acknowledged prior time served in three penitentiaries and a reformatory since age five.
