London Feb 14 The British government will refer the Palestine question to the United Nations after Bevin told delegates no British proposals found acceptable for further discussion. Arab leaders reiterated that partition or Jewish immigration must not be part of any solution.
The U S Public Health Service reports provisional 1946 data showing 3,264,000 live births, a record above 1943, and estimated deaths at 1,400,000, just under 1945's 1,401,719.
About thirty men in the Bethel community organized a fox drive yesterday. They sighted one fox and Mark Campbell Jr. secured the catch.
Our National Parks Hot Springs in Arkansas dates back to 1832 as the oldest park noted for its healing springs. Yellowstone in Wyoming was established in 1872. The system then lists 25 reservations including Yosemite Mount Rainier Crater Lake Mesa Verde Grand Canyon Mammoth Cave Carlsbad Caverns and other sites. Two centuries ago jurors in Cape Cod communities were prohibited from chewing tobacco.

Rural Homemakers and husbands are invited to Rural Neighbors Day at the Washington Methodist church on Tuesday February 18 as part of the Family Living Program. Mrs Merle Twinam and Mrs Raymond Sayre announce the program with state and local committee leaders directing exhibits and pageants. A noon potluck dinner precedes a program including Women of the Century, a county chorus, cello music, and a review of the 1946 47 women’s program with exhibits from various townships.
Grace Hill Moravian and New Haven Baptist churches in Aberdeen Angus collect from Robert Hyne to join the Heifer for Relief project for Ethiopia. Rev Floyd A. Smith delivered the heifer to the Dallas Center Iowa collection center. The churches funded the purchase with a Christmas freewill offering last December. Hyde reduced the price and donated a quarter of the cost.
Gerald E Chance aged 20 son of Mr and Mrs Earl Chance of 507 South Avenue C Washington enlisted in the regular army after a medical exam and swearing in at the Nebraska Iowa District in Omaha. He departed for army ground forces training at Fort Lewis Washington and will serve a two year term.
Hostesses include Mrs. George Dave as chairman and township chairman. Dining room led by Mrs. Cloyd Knapp as chairman with township representatives. Kitchen coordination by Mrs. Dave Wingard as chairperson with township representatives.
About five million civil servants walked off work in Paris delaying transportation, closing government offices, and halting telephone and radio services. Demonstrators marched along the Seine quays with banners while automatic networks and provincial lines fell silent.
The Washington County Ministerial Association will hold its monthly meeting at Crawfordsville Federated Presbyterian Church next Monday February 17 at 10 30. Professor Penny Packer of Iowa Wesleyan College will deliver the devotional at Mt Pleasant. Dinner at noon will be served by the Federated church women. Ministers should notify Mr Ford if they want dinner.
Mr and Mrs Gordon Bixby and their 10 month old son Pat have relocated to Washington from Cedar Rapids. Mr Bixby is a silver salesman with Peterson Baking Company and has been working out of Washington for several months. Both are natives of Cedar Rapids.
William Finke, 68, died at 11 30 p m at his home 621 South Second avenue after four years of declining health and a three week illness Funeral services were planned for Sunday at the Ines funeral home with the Rev Milo Phillips of St Pauls Evangelical and Reformed Church The decedent was born March 11 1860 in Des Moines county to William and Charlotte Finke He married Clara Rhee Lefforge January 15 1891 in Westboro Missouri The family home was near Crawfordsville and he had lived in Washington County since 1901 Surviving are his wife six sons Rov Willie Earl Antion Silas and Lafe two daughters Pearl Christner Velma Eicher one sister Mary Ostermire twenty nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren One daughter Mary McKeone is deceased
The Washington High School Forensic club sponsors a children’s hour at the Y on Saturday morning at 140 o’clock. First graders are invited. The hourlong story hour is run by the club’s girls under Mrs. Ben Robbins Jr. and a committee including Nancy Patterson Norma Payne Shirley Blattner Julian Hauter and Rosalyn Mayer.
Edgar Porter and his son John sue Roy Brewer and son Robert over a December 29 1946 collision at North Second Avenue and Fast Fifth Street Washington claiming negligence by Robert Brewer led to damages. Attorney L J Klehoe represents the plaintiffs with Judge J G Patterson referenced.
Mrs Frances Hines 48 wife of Leo Hines 2821 Dubuque Davenport died of a cerebral hemorrhage at her home Wednesday. She was born at Crawfordsville daughter of Edward and Olive Riley and survived by three sisters Hallie Delzell Davenport Bernice Smith Oakland and Mike Jehel Samar Calif. Funeral services and burial will be in Davenport Saturday.
Washington Nebraska reports that starting tomorrow rent control ends for 24 000 hotels 15 000 motor courts and many tourist homes with many rates rising 10 to 20 percent. Hardship provisions for rental homes and apartments start, while decontrol will apply to about 1 500 000 rooms.
The Astonisher at Washington senior high won a certificate of honor in the Time School Press project, sponsored by the Iowa Tuberculosis Association and the Washington County Tuberculosis Association. Julia Hayter wrote the winning article, and 66 schools entered the contest with 27 certificates awarded this year.
Washington February 14 UP The budget committee refused to exempt the army and navy from a proposed 6 billion dollar cut in fiscal 1948. Chairman John Taber said the full 6 billion would be trimmed from Truman’s 37.5 billion budget for the year starting July 1. The army-navy share is about 1.0 billion. The panel kept its session secret after overruling democratic opposition.
Peiping reports say a U.S. Marine from the Second Battalion Fifth Marines was shot and killed in downtown Peiping last night. An investigating marine squad said there was no prior argument or disturbance before the fatal shot by a Chinese assailant.
