Lieut Col Arthur Lobdell, commander of the nearby prisoner of war camp, invites Clarinda ministers to conduct religious services for army personnel and prisoners. The move follows a petition by several German inmates seeking spiritual guidance. A chaplain will be assigned once the camp reaches full strength.
Waterloo police hunted transom burglars who robbed two offices late Saturday night entering through small transoms. One office lost sixty two pennies and the other twenty six dollars, the latter having been robbed three times in the past year.
AMES Charles Laverty of Indianola was elected president of the Town Rural Young People's assembly at its tenth annual meeting in Ames Sunday. Other officers named include Irene Upton of Burlington as vice president and Ches ter Ledore of Ottumwa as secretary. Ralph Skoog of Vinton treasurer, Collins Bower of Bridgewater, Gerald Jennett of Maxwell, Lucille Lutz of Zearing as directors at large. Ray Sorenson of the farm bureau spoke on aiding rural youth groups in shaping land policy.
A Des Moines area man protested to the price panel that a tavern slot machine paid only 14 nickels after a jackpot. The panel said one arm bandits fall outside its jurisdiction while panels in 64 counties handle price ceilings. Dale Smith noted over 1,000 panel members meet weekly to monitor prices and enforce refunds. the district’s largest refund to date was $1,100 for three trucks.
A German bombing near Nettuno Italy at an American evacuation hospital killed 27 people including three nurses and one Red Cross worker and wounded 64. The scene shows Dr Maurice Gershman of New York with a damaged tent and Nurse Lieut Sally Hocutt of Wendell North Carolina and Pvt Marshall Floyd examining a bomb crater beside a large American Red Cross flag.
Warren Dare was chosen county president of Boys 4-H clubs at the Saturday evening event in the YMCA Community room. About 100 attendees heard officers include Bob Foster as vice president and Duane Schneider as secretary treasurer, with awards and patriotic table decorations marking the program.
Davenport police seek suspects after thieves entered Jim Craton sporting goods through a skylight Saturday night and stole about 25 pistols valued at 600 to 1000 dollars plus 78 dollars from a cash drawer. No fingerprints were found at the scene.
CEDAR RAPIDS Pvt. Leon ard Kamberling 20 Lisbon was arrested here Sunday night as absent without leave from Camp McCall NC. Kamberling told police he wanted to come home to see his folks. Police said the soldier apparently left his company when it went on maneuvers.
Harold Kelley of Kalona, 19, is in Washington county jail after admitting he borrowed three cars in the last three weeks. He was arraigned on operating a car without owner's consent and fixed at a $500 bond. He said he would accept sentence when Judge J. G. Patterson sits in Washington.
An audience of 312 attended a union service at the Church of Christ Sunday evening as part of a seven church series in January and February. Cold weather reduced attendance slightly and prevented overflow. Next Sunday the service moves to the Presbyterian church with Dr F W Eastwood delivering the sermon. The series closes at United Presbyterian church with Rev George Kerr preaching. Notable music included Boyd White singing The Twenty third Psalm with organ by Mrs White, and a Church of Christ anthem. Ministers present included Kerr Trenerry Eastwood and Rev Basil Mee. Rev Ivan Riess delivered the sermon Inducted Into Service on the Christian calling and duty.
Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon for Harold J. Hays at L. A. Jones funeral home led by Rev. Fred K. Miller. Burial in Elm Grove cemetery was delayed until Sunday because his brother Allyn Hays did not arrive from California until Sunday. Pallbearers were H. J. Schoonover Albert Askea Harvey Meek Claude Reister Howard Hays and Al Ledger.
London dispatch says Allied Boston Mitchells and Mosquitos bombed northern France targets while U S Thunderbolt fighters hit Gilze Rijen in Holland. RAF and allies faced minimal resistance as about 8 German planes claimed destroyed in London, with 15 penetrations reported.
A new heating plant with a stoker is in operation at the court house today. It was installed Saturday while the court house offices were closed for Lincoln's birthday.
Fire department responded Saturday to the Mace garage where a pan of cleaning fluid ignited. The blaze was extinguished almost immediately with no damage reported.
Finnish government dispatches Juho K. Paasikivi to Stockholm to contact Soviet officials and pursue a separate peace. The United States urged Finland to exit the war to avoid harsher terms for Germany and its allies. A London dispatch says Hitler ordered Finland to halt such talks and warned of measures by German troops.
Columbia University records the largest enrollment in the United States as of today. The university confirms a historic student body size surpassing previous national benchmarks.
Washington county nears the close of the January 18 to February 15 campaign with an estimated shortfall near 900000 of a 1680000 quota. Chairman G E Mace appeals for last minute bond purchases while banks report about 100000 in weekly sales, including 60000 by local banks.
Julius Kunik proprietor of the Washington Fruit Market has purchased G N Barclay cash grocery stock and fixtures. The two stores will be merged and moved to the Barclay location on the southwest square by March 1. Barclay, in failing health, will retire. remodeling will create a self serve market with more space and parking.
Washington Rotary sponsors four lectures on Contributors to a New World Order starting Feb 22 with talks by C Chia i Cheng Jay C Field David Cusham Coyle and Albert Parry in Hartford Chicago and Washington. A audience forum follows each talk. Tickets cost 50 cents plus tax and proceeds cover expenses with underwriter support. Tickets available at the Journal office or the Y M C A.
Dr. F W Eastwood recalls William Brinning at a Presbyterian church memorial for the late Pvt William Brinning son of Mrs Grace Richards captured at Corregidor and died December 13 in a Japanese prison camp. Eastwood recalls the soldier’s quiet faith and enlistment in 1939.
Allied troops push below Rome on the Anzio-Aprilia road and seize a strategic bridge after repelling German waves. British armor and infantry under strong air cover hold the line as German reserves push in, while the Aprilia area sees diminished firing and signs of regrouping.
