The Evening Journal reports the Waco Community School District has reduced its property tax levy for the 18 month period compared with last year. The rate drops more than 2 mills from 1973, from 54.257 to 78.119 mills, equating to 52.079 mills on a 12 month basis.
Managers at Montgomery Ward and J C Penney report items stolen from one community store were moved to the other and returned for cash refunds. Officials say steps are being taken to prevent similar incidents.
Ninth grade parents are invited to a meeting in room 10 on Thursday from 7 30 to 9 p m. Counselors Earnest Beemblossom Dean Knight and Richard Collins will provide information on next year and the student’s total high school career. Parents should bring the student’s registration.
Southeast Iowa deputies continued the manhunt for George Dennison 17 Ottumwa after his partner Raymond Struckman 15 was recaptured. Struckman had runaway from Blake Minnesota and the youths escaped via a third story ledge and roof jump. Dennison was in custody for an Ottumwa grocery store armed robbery when the escape occurred.
State Revenue Director Donald Briggs said first refund checks are mailed this week and taxpayers should allow six weeks for processing. About 27,000 refunds have been processed as the department hits the tax season crunch. roughly two of every three Iowa taxpayers are expected to receive refunds with about one million filings anticipated.
About 40 employees were out of work after a fire at the Georges A. Rolfes Co. plant in Boone caused an estimated 500000 to 1000000 dollars in damage. Fire officials said the blaze started in the paint room Tuesday night and flames were visible up to a mile away.
Fire officials estimate damage at 75 000 to 100 000 in a blaze at Ferkins Motel on the south edge of New Hampton. The fire started in a gas clothes dryer and was found by a newly registered guest. No injuries reported.
The forecast calls for cloudy skies this afternoon tonight and Thursday with colder air. Highs reach the upper 30s this afternoon and Thursday, with overnight lows in the low to mid 20s. North to northwesterly winds will be 10 to 15 mph this afternoon and tonight.
Washington Education Association president Al Olson counters critics of the Iowa public employees collective bargaining bill. He argues opponents fear accountability and insists binding arbitration would be limited. Olson defends teachers' role in decisions, disputes misrepresented pamphlets, and school leaders’ reluctance to allow excessive scope or strikes.
The Iowa Senate approved 45 to 4 a bill granting Gov. Robert D. Ray power to order fuel rationing and to cooperate with the federal government on mandatory fuel oil allocation. Democrats argued the measure cedes legislative control and would let the governor wield excessive authority during the energy crisis.
President Nixon asked Congress for a $21 billion program to revitalize mass transit and railroads. The plan includes a Unified Transportation Assistance Act with about $16 billion for urban transit, subways, and buses, plus $3.4 billion for small cities and rural areas. A $2 billion Transportation Improvement Act aims to end deteriorating railroads and modernize freight service while improving passenger options. The package would be the largest federal commitment to public transportation and would give cities flexibility in spending on capital projects and other transit needs.
President Nixon completed his annual physical at Bethesda Naval Medical Center. Doctors reported he is very well and an aide said he feels fine. The spokesman confirmed the exam results, noting the president is very well.
A precursor schedule for SEATS introduces the bus to Washington County from February 18 to 22 with stop visits in multiple towns. The full service begins February 25 with defined weekly routes and a 25 cent to 75 cent fare structure depending on rider status. Dr. Robert H. Drennan, executive director of Hoover Health Council, described the agency as a health coordinator that approves but does not initiate facility projects. He cited council approval for a county hospital long term care unit expansion and a coronary care unit installation, noting the council spans eight counties including Washington, Benton, Cedar, Delaware, Iowa, Johnson, Jones, Linn and is funded locally with federal matching support since 1973.
