First District Congressman Ed Mezvinsky will visit Washington on Thursday at 7 30 p m to discuss issues with constituents. The session in Iowa City will be at the school administration building on West Main Street as part of a district wide series during a three day recess.
Mason City teachers ratified a new contract with the school board for the next school year by an 87 percent favorable vote. The package totals a 54 percent wage and fringe benefits increase, with a clause for an additional 8 percent rise if the legislature provides extra funds, awaiting final board approval.
Washington County 4-H members in 7th to 9th grades must file applications by February 12 in the Extension Office to join a Monday February 16 bus trip. Transportation costs are raised to $6 with pickup from the Extension Office at 7 45 a.m. and Ainsworth Corners at 8 a.m. Participants will visit Continental Baking Company Palmer College and possibly WOC TV Servus Rubber Isabel Bloom Studio and the Art Center before stopping at Hoover Memorial on the return. Lunch money should be brought for quick service outlets on Brady Street.
Administration sources say the United States and Saudi Arabia will unveil a 1.2 million arms pact next week including M 60 tanks Dragon shoulder-held missiles and armored personnel carriers no aircraft but about 900 million in construction contracts such as a major naval facility the agreement will be disclosed to congressional committees before its official announcement
A Democratic platform committee will meet in the Washington school administration building on Friday February 13 at 7 30 p m. The session aims to finalize the platform for submission to the Washington County Democratic Convention on March 6. Al Fritz serves as platform chairman.

Clarke College seniors Fran O'Brien and Teri Hawks pressed Iowa legislators to back private college tuition grants. They urged funding though the House and Senate face limits, noting 10,000 eligible students went without aid last year. Lawmakers praised their effort while outlining current $9 million funding and possible future steps.
The Senate approved the six year reappointments of Ray Bailey of Milford and Mary Louise Petersen of Harlan to the Iowa Board of Regents, while not acting on Donald Shaw’s status. Bailey and Petersen faced near unanimous votes, with Petersen drawing one nay. The body also confirmed Thomas Huston as state superintendent of banking and Helen Riechart to the Board of Physical Therapy Examiners.

The Human Resources Committee backed a bill to ban smoking in all public places with designated exemptions and in private spaces with no smoking signs. The panel replaced the original text with an amendment defining smoking as inhaling or exhaling smoke or possessing a lighted cigarette or cigar.
