In Redding California a seventh grade science class fed a white rat only candy and sweets while another rat received a balanced diet. The sweet tooth rat remained healthy, but the properly fed rat died, prompting questions about the experiment and teachings.
Five Iowans were killed in traffic incidents Friday night into Saturday. Thomas Johnson 23 Grinnell. John Anderson 27 rural Cerro Gordo County. Clarence Brown 50 Lancaster Missouri. Alex Fahn 43 Vetter Iowa. Lewis Deitz 28 Fairbank Iowa died in crashes on US 6 near Grinnell county roads near Thorton near Auburn on US 71 and on Iowa 150 in Buchanan County.
Mrs William Schantz 66 died Friday afternoon at Washington hospital following injuries from a car accident south of Washington a week earlier. Survivors include husband William Schantz son W E Schantz of Mt. Pleasant daughter Mrs Mary Wright of Des Moines and three grandchildren. Funeral Sunday at 2 p.m. Zehr Funeral Home Wayland with burial in Eicher cemetery. Lulu Wood born March 8 1890 was her maiden name. She was buried with other siblings.
Claude M Borders 59 of Crawfordsville died this morning from injuries after axle failure on a section crew work car on the railroad. He worked for C B and Q. Funeral set for Feb 13 at Jones Funeral Home with Rev H B Fay. Burial in Crawfordsville cemetery. He was born Jan 28 1897 in Menefee County NL and moved to Crawfordsville in 1920. Survived by brother Walter Mt Pleasant and three sisters Martha Borders Washington and Mrs Murray Sibcy and Mrs Helen Sibcy Trenton Ohio.

Connell recalled two visits before Jan 18 and pointed to Kahler as connected to the $2,500 contribution dispute. Case denied knowledge of a forged telegram urging support for the bill.

Dr. Robert J. Dwyer, 49, a Harvard trained scientist, stabbed four coworkers and himself with a 3 inch blade at Beckman Instruments Agra division in South Pasadena. He remained in serious condition at Los Angeles General Hospital while the victims were treated and released. Dwyer, a Pasadena doctor with doctorates in chemistry and physics, was booked on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and gave no statement about the incident.
Duluth Minnesota reports Albert Woolson the nation s last Civil War Union Army veteran celebrated his 109th birthday with a cake marked 109 in candy icing. He will dine with 16 relatives and friends as his daughter limits festivities due to fatigue. A doctor praised his unexpected recovery from recent illness and noted he enjoyed a hearty breakfast and hundreds of cards. Woolson was born February 11 1847 in Watertown New York and joined the Union Army at age 16 in Company C of the 1st Minnesota Heavy Artillery as a drummer boy.
The Youth Center hall over McLellan's store will be closed tonight due to a benefit dance sponsored by the Youth Center at the Legion hall. Larry Cochran, student president, says counselors and many high school students are arranging the event and the regular Saturday night session will resume next week.
Investigators say a $50,000 fire at the Tama Indian School was started by vandals. Firemen fought the blaze for about two hours before bringing it under control. Sheriff Flynn noted the one story wooden building was set in paper toweling and that state agents from the Bureau of Criminal Investigation were on the scene.
Western Allies warned Moscow they will hold Russia responsible for any attack on West Berlin by armed Communist gangs in the Soviet sector. The protest stressed the duty to defend West Berlin and rejected any Soviet waiver of responsibility amid Red Berlin’s 23 000 civilian parade with armed participants.
The Agriculture Department announced farmers with 1955 crop corn and wheat held in storage can reseal for another year. Reseal extends corn loans to no later than July 31 1957 in most states while wheat loans extend to March 31 1957 on demand. Beneficiaries must keep grain on farm and convert purchase agreements to price support loans.

Carl Brown of Washington learns of his brother Clarence Brown’s death after a late Friday crash near Ottumwa when his car hit a stock truck. A former Washington resident for 11 years he worked for the state highway commission and left a widow and three children Leota Snowbarger of Lancaster Robert in California and LeRoy near Crawfordsville. He died at Ottumwa hospital about two hours after the wreck.
Ohio County Prosecutor Joseph A Gompers labeled 14 year old twin brothers as hot suspects in the bludgeon murder of nine year old cub scout David Powell. The boy’s body was found under a Wheeling Island porch with multiple stab wounds and a shattered skull. Police questioned the twins after their mother withdrew them from Madison Elementary and Junior High School.
Student leaders campaign against mob rule as Autherine Lucy plans to return to the University of Alabama if the court orders it. Walter Flowers says the issue is democracy versus mob rule and urges nonviolence as Feb. 29 hearing looms. Campus groups condemn the three days of violence following Lucy's appearance.
