More than $100,000 in wages were paid to Appanoose county miners Saturday, the fourth and largest payroll this winter, with over 2,000 miners paid. Centerville merchants report up to 20 percent higher business than last winter.
Dietrich J. Westhoff, 53, a farmer northwest of Lemars, was killed late Friday afternoon when a tree fell on him as neighbors worked cutting trees in his grove. He walked into the path of the falling trunk.
Mary Barcus a rural school teacher under 21 eloped with Virgil Helms 33 father of two. They were married and the couple appeared Wednesday night and found their road to romance ended in an Omaha police station. Mary returned home unemployed while Virgil remained jailed.
Adolph Martens of Keswick Dover Lake farm was recently acquitted of murdering his 14 year old stepdaughter Maxine Abel and remains free on a $20,000 bond while awaiting trial on a separate charge of killing his wife.
Mrs. Laura McReynolds, 65, a prominent Centerville resident, was killed when struck by a car driven by Herbert Pierson as she crossed a street in Centerville.
Six acres in southeast Waverly were purchased from TM Liam Brooks for 1200 dollars to host a 76000 dollar sewage disposal plant. The property also includes gravel deposits on the site.
Free milk deposits to supply milk to undernourished needy school children opened in Bedford Saturday under the Bedford Welfare League and Lions Club. Nurses from the offices of a local physician will direct distribution.

Clarence Koob 32 son of John Koob of Dakota City Ia found dead in the kitchen of his Humboldt home Sunday morning. Police note he left a card party in town and drove to Liverpool to join a drinking party there. Footprints show the body was dragged to the house by other men.
Two Iowa State liquor squad members in Des Moines investigated a downtown area and arrested the driver after discovering 11 gallons of alcohol in the vehicle.
Independence page reports 24 year old Cameron on faces charges for operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. He waived preliminary hearing and plans to plead guilty in district court Monday. His father Alexander Cameron of Rockford arrived to claim the car and said his son must accept the penalty.
Albert J. Linnenkamp 41 a World War veteran who served in France died at his home after a two week illness of pneumonia complications. Funeral at St James Catholic church Wednesday at 9 30 a m with Leon Beatty post American Legion taking part. Burial Harper cemetery. He lived five years in Washington and worked at a local Ford garage prior to death. Survived by widow Mary Kathryn Pollock and three children Elizabeth Albert Jr and Robert. Funeral home rosary service to follow.
Santa Monica reports Braden Powell, an Englishman, conceived and led the Boy Scouts founding. The anniversary falls on Friday with the international convention expected in Washington D C bringing top youth from around the world. The letter praises merit and democratic ideals of the movement.
The Methodist family night supper Wednesday will be followed by a stereoptical lecture by Dean Gould of Iowa Wesleyan on The Indians of the Southwest. Drastic sales tax revision proposed by Shangle cuts tax on sales below 60 cents while imposing two percent on gross sales. In the house a debate over a congressional resolution to pass the soldiers bonus bill ended with referral to the house military affairs committee.
Des Moines reports the Iowa legislature enters February with investigations planned including scrutiny of the liquor commission and state warrants back to 1925. Debates over a private sale of sinking fund warrants and a major public health bill on training standards for chiropractors osteopaths physicians and surgeons dominate the session.
James Merrick, 71, mayor of Coppock and longtime C B & Q section foreman for 35 years, died after months of illness. Funeral at Coppock Christian church Tuesday at 10 AM if roads permit, burial at Hillcrest Cemetery Brighton. Survived by widow Emma and two children Eli W Merrick and Hattie Roth. siblings William, Howard, Rosemary.

Mrs Lewis Hochstedler 26 died at her Kalona home after a week with pneumonia and complications. Survived by husband three daughters, her parents Mr and Mrs W H Plank and brother Stanley of Kalona. She lived all her life in Kalona and was Kalona High School graduate. funeral arrangements likely for Wednesday.
Funeral in Crawfordsville Tuesday at ten for Elmer McKinley 77 burial beside parents William and Liza Meinley. Rev. Er. S. Hebner to lead Methodist rites. McKinley died by his own hand yesterday at niece Mrs. Charles Lane home near Mt. Pleasant. Born Nov 6 1857 near Mt. Pleasant he lived in Wyoming and Washington. A noted fiddler violin his constant companion. Last of his father’s line with siblings D. H. Griffith Archie Hoyt and Jesse McKinley long deceased.
Elmer McKinley died by suicide at his niece Mrs. Charlies Long’s home five miles north of Mt. Pleasant. Occurred at 10 o’clock Sunday morning. Mrs. Long and others witnessed or learned of the incident. Police and coroner report filed.
The Journal closes its Chuckle-Ad contest with 61 winners from 529 entrants. Winners receive free tickets to the State theater. results published beside the classified ads on page two. The effort shows wide county participation and readers across towns and rural routes.
An inquest found Mr McKinley died from a self inflicted gunshot in an upstairs room using a twelve gauge shotgun. The verdict cited personal safety concerns and worry over losing his home. The Longs planned to move him to another place with more space after years of hardship.
In Flemington New Jersey on February 11 Edward Reilly argued for Bruno Hauptmann's freedom. He claimed disloyalty in the Lindbergh household and accused butler Oliver Whatley nurse Betty Gow and Henry Johnson of complicity. The ladder was a state plant and the state scenario flawed. The Lindbergh terrier and silence of the household were cited as proof against intruders. Hauptmann listened as state attorney Hauck presented the murder case, with Wilentz due to give the closing.
Seals on eight freight cars on a siding near the Rock Island freight house were broken last night. A Burlington yard car was broken into and two cases of shoes were taken from a Rock Island car. A case of medicine droppers is missing from the Burlington car. Sheriff H. M. Putnam was informed.
Paul Putnam son of Mr and Mrs A E Putnam has been promoted to captain in the United States Marine Corps air service. He was a first lieutenant and now serves as an instructor at the naval air school in Pensacola Florida. He joined the Marines in 1923 and saw service in Nicaragua in three periods including time on the ground twice and later in the air division.
Crawfordsville February 11 The funeral of A B Gault was held at the United Presbyterian church at 2:20 in the Sabbath afternoon conducted by Rev W G Robertson. The service was well attended with the church filled. Casket bearers included R R Shaffer R J Williams J C Huston EF C Monson E L Clark and J C Mitchell John White Clarence Davis Kenneth Rhea and Bruce Hanna sang The Lord is My Shepherd.
