A cold wave from northern Canada drives south into the Midwest as temperatures dip with readings near four below zero in Iowa while others feel the harsh wind chill. The nation reels from a severe blizzard with relief winds shifting from south to northwest.
Washington high school placed second in the Iowa Nine declamatory contest at Muscatine with Helen Masson winning the oratorical division and Ruth Marie Morrison taking third in dramatic. Davenport high won the contest totals with a first and second in the finals among seven schools.
Des Moines reports drastic pay cuts for state employees loom as the Iowa House backed a maximum $7,500 annual salary. Senate action to follow on concurrent resolution. other measures include school funding, property tax limits, library mandates, and teacher transfer provisions.
A morning fire damaged the home of Milton H. Sweet on East Second Street. A small hole in the roof from a chimney spark was extinguished with chemicals. damage is said to be small and insured.
Hundreds submit word-building entries for the Washington Butter contest by Keister Creamery, with two large boxes filled and more received by mail. Judges begin tonight and prize announcements follow next Tuesday. First prize is twenty five pounds of butter. seven other major prizes await entrants. Each entrant receives a souvenir kitchen article.
Washington defeats Mt. Pleasant 33 to 19 as Coach Guy Carlton celebrates his birthday. The Demons, improving after a late-season slump, shut out Mt. Pleasant in the final period and eye upcoming games against Ottumwa and Fairfield as they push for a stronger finish.
Washington Y M C A basketball team traveled to Eldon and defeated the Ramblers 62 to 37 for a second win after a 75 to 24 victory at home. Ahrens led scoring as Full Little Westermark and Blick also contributed strong play in a fast, disciplined effort.

Funeral services are set for Catherine Marie Hughes, infant daughter of Mr and Mrs Oscar Hughes of three miles southeast of town. Surviving are the parents, a 15-year-old brother Arden and a 19-year-old sister Mildred. The mother Nina Twinam before marriage.
Mr. FPOC Koehler and his baby departed Washington County Hospital yesterday afternoon to return home near Crawfordsville, marking their discharge.
A massive gas tank blast in Neunkirchen injures and kills many as an industrial district is left in ruins. Authorities report 61 bodies recovered, death toll expected to reach 170 with 1,000 injured. The 156 foot tank top was found half a mile away. five hundred workers were nearby. Cause under investigation.
