Washington reports the Swayne impeachment trial began with two witnesses as house managers present and the senate allotting 2 to 5 pm daily sessions. Story recalls a St Bernard hero dog that stopped Miss Elizabeth Cone on Sheboygan Street and led her to a unconscious, ice cold lad in the snow. Two bystanders aided reviving him with rubbing and stimulants as a telegram bearing news of a Central engineer's death was found in the boy's hand.
Robert Simpson Woodward, recently chosen head of the Carnegie Institute, has served as dean of the School of Pure Science at Columbia University since 1895 and as professor of physics and mathematical physics. He was born in Rochester Michigan on July 21 1840 and graduated from the University of Michigan in 1872. He held several posts in the astronomical and geodetic survey and authored numerous Smithsonian technical works.
Virginia execution reports J Samuel McCue dying on the scaffold after a confession read by his spiritual advisers. He walked to the scaffold without aid, spoke nothing before the fall, and died eight minutes later. Advisers issued a signed statement confirming he alone bore responsibility for the murder.
Chicago February 11 ex Representative Comerford vows to go to Springfield March 6 to aid inditing the man who offered Representative Lurton a bribe He says he will pay any price to convict the offender and will stand on his record before Illinois voters while pursuing justice for the state legislature.
Calumet Michigan February 11 A large mining transfer sees Charles A Wright and wife of Hancock conveying Eagle Harbor properties and an undivided half in Amygdaloid mining lands in Keweenaw County to City Trust Company Boston. Over 10 000 acres join a vast parcel to form a development company. The remainder of the Amygdaloid estate was purchased by new organizers at auction last month.
Persistent rumors say the 25 cent a ton coal reduction two weeks ago is not followed by a second cut. Operators report no established price and warn that in the black coal district price setting is now “everybody for himself,” signaling a volatile market.
J Samuel McCue and his wife were attacked in their home after church services. Mrs McCue was killed by a gunshot to the heart while McCue sustained facial injuries and later died. Authorities investigated whether an intruder or other perpetrator caused the crime.
The coroner's jury held Mette for murder after a fatal incident three days earlier. The trial concluded in minutes with the jurors convicting him. his criminal lawyer spared no resource. A Wagenroth daughter pleaded with him, but the gallows awaited.
The pioneer Congregational minister of Wisconsin Rev Eaton died aged 84 at his son’s home in Newton Mass. He began his work in early Wisconsin and served Lancaster church as pastor for forty years. He was a captain in the Seventh Wisconsin Infantry during the Civil War. Burial will be in Lancaster, Wisconsin.
