A two year old girl Sheryl Ely daughter of Mr and Mrs Hubert Ely Guthrie Center swallowed a safety pin last Monday and was operated on to remove it at Iowa Methodist hospital Des Moines on Saturday. The incident occurred in Des Moines.
The Rock Valley Rotary club funds a "Fruit Tree in Every Backyard" movement this spring to plant trees across the town, aiming to enhance overall appearance and community pride.
The electric organ recently installed at St. John's Methodist Church was dedicated in special Sunday services. It was a gift from Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Chrisman of Mapleton and Roswell Chrisman of Winnetka ill Wil The event highlighted the generosity of local and Chicago area donors.
Charles Sharp, 72, a retired farmer and four time pancake eating derby winner, travels to New York to appear on a People broadcast Tuesday night. In the last contest he ate 93 pancakes and 38 cups of coffee in two days. He weighs 140 pounds.

A 35 year old expectant mother in Dubuque suffered smallpox and could not be hospitalized due to no isolation facilities. A nurse began home care after hospital access proved unavailable and doctors reported the mother’s life in danger.
German reconnaissance planes flew to Reykajavik Iceland about 1000 miles from North America and machine gunned the British airstrip. The attack occurred yesterday with planes flying at least 600 miles from a Norwegian base to Iceland near Greenland. British pursuit planes on the ground at Reykajavik were machine gunned according to the high command.
Des Moines reports the house approved a proposal to cut by half the tax assessments on sealed corn after a three hour debate. The move marks a partial victory for supporters of the exemption amendment.
Cedar Rapids Iowa February 10 4AU P Mr and Mrs Walter Bender were given until Thursday to enter a plea on murder charges tied to the death of her five year old son Ralph Kohlicek. The couple confessed to plotting to kill by setting a fire and locking the door where he slept. They were arraigned before Judge H C Ring and returned to jail without bond after a continuance request by their attorney Jim Patterson.
Walter Bender confessed after extended questioning that he plotted with his wife Mabel to kill Ralph Kohlicek five, to share between 1600 and 1700 dollars left by the boy’s father. Mrs Bender earlier admitted burning the boy on November 6 by locking him in his bedroom and setting bedding ablaze. A first degree murder charge was filed against Mrs. Bender and later against her husband.
OsKaloosa reports the death of Prof Charles E Ellis age 61 a former Penn College faculty member from 1930 to 1940 who retired to a fruit ranch near Seattle Washington He was a Pleasant Plain native and held a master of science from Iowa State College His wife two sons and a daughter survive
The Supreme Court refused to review a National Labor Relations Board order against Ford Motor Co, upholding a decree that Ford coerced and intimidated workers at River Rouge and Highland Park plants. Ford must cease anti union activity, stop threats or interference with organizing rights, and reinstate with back pay 23 discharged employees.
Clarence Woodrow Sorensen will give the final talk in the Institute of International Understanding series at the high school. The lecture is scheduled for eight o’clock and will address Human Values in a Changing World.
Washington public schools will offer sheet metal work and motor mechanics courses for unemployed young men ages 17 to 24 if at least ten enroll. Isaac Newton Arnold, 84, of Kalona died Saturday after a month of illness. Born Jan 29 1857, he married Margaret Todd in 1878 and had one daughter who died young. He served as Kalona Sunday school superintendent for over twenty years and lived in Kalona 24 years. Surviving siblings include sisters Mrs D H Rittenhouse and Mrs A H Westphal and brothers Seth Arnold and Richard Arnold who died recently. Funeral arrangements are through R H Petersimeim Funeral Home, pending word from California. The service will be at Kalona Methodist Church.
President Roosevelt reshuffles the U S diplomatic corps with John G Winant named ambassador to Great Britain Clarence Gauss moves from Australia to China Nelson T Johnson to Australia William Dawson named ambassador to Uruguay Anthony J Drexel Biddle to Poland and to London for exiled governments Alexander Kirk becomes minister to Egypt in Rome.
The Bert Spangler family home on the John Pratt farm, five miles south of Washington, burned to the ground Saturday evening. Fire started in the attic over the kitchen. neighbors helped move belongings out and the Farmers Mutual fire truck, driven by Harvey Meek, saved nearby structures. Insurance covered the dwelling and household goods.
The 3 800 ton British freighter Ramon de Larringa rolled over on its side in the Delaware breakwater after grounding as cargo shifted causing a heavy list. One crewman of 47 is reported missing.
Judge J. G. Patterson granted Amber A. Moomey a separate maintenance decree against Cullen B. Moomey in Washington county district court. The earlier report wrongly stated it as a divorce.

Des Moines Feb 10 A constitutional amendment proposed by Rep G W Hunt would increase Iowa Senate seats to 54 and redraw districts to a permanent plan. The changes add four seats in the northwest while the rest of the state retains its current representation.
Representative B S Moyle will speak at a meeting of school executives at Lincoln school Wednesday evening. E L Stewart could not attend. About 60 to 70 persons from Washington County Schoolmasters club and county educational councils will attend after dinner at 6:30. The program covers legislation affecting schools.
Elbert Leroy Andrews, 27, died in Cedar Rapids when 25 foot lengths of steel toppled onto him as workers for Laplant Coates Co. tried to free him. Deputy Coroner Mulson said the metal's pressure on his chest prevented breathing. Marion Olds of Davenport had been in Washington recently on business.

Sioux City report says 64 year old Charles Deroos died after his head was crushed between a railroad car and a truck. He worked on the Floyd River flood control project unloading steel reinforcement rods with other laborers.
