In Des Moines Senate Democrats used their majority to push a substitute resolution for a broad investigation of the Town Department of Agriculture amid a dispute over the firing of GOP milk sanitarian Richard Dennler. The probe, led by six Democrats and four Republicans, can subpoena records and follows complaints about department personnel actions under both parties.

Helicopters Downed Near Saigon In U.S. Viet Nam Clash
Three U S Army helicopters were shot down by Communist ground fire about 30 miles east of Saigon. One crewman died and eight were wounded as heavy fighting raged on the ground. Vietnamese paratroopers reported nine killed and 38 wounded, with 18 enemy bodies found. The incident followed U S plans to use Hawk anti aircraft missiles from Danang as reprisals for air strikes on North Viet Nam.

County board weighs staff reports and area vocational plans
Washington County board of education heard reports from reading consultant Mrs. Theodore Schwartz who now supervises 189 weekly sessions, and from Emily Munson, a speech and hearing therapist serving 156 children weekly. Munson tested all third graders and, with Sharon Cox, screened first to twelfth graders, identifying 57 needing medical follow up. The board also reviewed two proposed area vocational districts centered at Ottumwa and Cedar Rapids, and decided to continue study without selecting a district.

Mrs. Charles Curtis of Crawfordsville reports their son Larry Curtis was wounded in the Plieka raid and hospitalized but not seriously hurt. He had earlier received a shrapnel wound to the leg and returned to duty. The sentry who alerted the raid and was killed is believed to be a close friend of Larry. Eight Bodies Recovered After Eastern Airlines Crash
A large rescue effort combed the Atlantic off Long Island for victims of Eastern Airlines Flight 663. Eight bodies, none intact, have been recovered as investigators seek the wreckage of the Boston to Atlanta flight. The main wreck rests about 65 feet down, with debris spread over a 200 square mile area near Jones Beach.
