President Eisenhower said he will use all constitutional powers to prevent a new Middle East clash. He cited possible peaceful outcomes from non-bitter talks with Nikolai Bulganin and anticipated joint U S British and French diplomacy at the State Department. Officials noted UN measures or sanctions could be considered if tensions rise.
Mrs. Bessie Viola Linblom dies at 76. Funeral services are Friday at 2 p.m. at Jones Funeral Home with Dr. Walter Scheuermann in charge. Burial follows in Elm Grove cemetery.
A gray foggy day covered most of Iowa with mild statewide highs in the upper 30s to 40s. Temperatures ranged from 16 degrees at Spencer to 35 at Davenport with drizzle and light snow in the south and northwest. By tonight another wave may bring light snow as clouds clear by Thursday evening.

Gov. Leo A. Hoegh announced a 2 496 acre underground coal field located about 10 miles northeast of Chariton in Lucas County. The field is estimated to hold 11 million tons and mining rights are held by the Central Iowa Fuel Co. Des Moines. Data on further Iowa coal fields is being collected.
The Washington County Firemen's Association will hold its next meeting Monday evening February 13 at the Ka lona fire station. Officials note the date change due to the sectional basketball tournament starting February 20. Secretary Robert L. Gates says good representation is expected from all five county companies.
Fred J. Chihak, 67, a resident of Highland township in Washington County, died early this afternoon. Funeral arrangements were listed as definite today and likely to be held Friday afternoon at Jones Funeral Home.

The Iowa Highway Commission approved 5 million dollars for counties this year to fund farm to market roads. The distribution uses two thirds on an old formula and one third on a new plan that includes traffic counts. Total annual county funds for farm to market roads amount to 12 to 13 million dollars from state and federal sources.
Evangelist Rev. Lawrence Lacour and Mrs Lacour of Des Moines will conduct a series of evangelistic meetings at West Chester Methodist Church from February 19 to 26. Lacour, a member of the Iowa Des Moines conference, is known locally for prior Washington church appearances and summer Japan visits. Mrs Lacour will assist with music, including her harp, and neighboring church choirs may provide special music for the series.
At the University of Alabama Autherine Lucy remains barred from classes as authorities stand firm to avoid violence. Attorney Arthur Shores threatens contempt of court if she is not readmitted. Roy Wilkins calls for criminal action against those blocking her attendance. Lucy says most students want her back, with some expressing friendliness.

The show includes drums and bells demonstrations and Three Little Pigs with narration by Lucy Wyse. The program splits into Junior Band and High School Band segments. Delegates from Henry County attend Iowa Education Association meeting in Des Moines to set policy for educational practices.
The Washington YMCA personnel committee led by Dave Elder is seeking a new general secretary after Artemas Brown's resignation. The search involves regional and national YMCA leads, with emphasis on replacing a high quality past staff. The local Y will maintain full programs during the vacancy while the process continues.
Washington County Hospital board studies applications for the superintendent post to fill the vacancy created by Esther Squire’s resignation. C F Letts, board chairman, says search has been ongoing and aims to fill the position soon.
Des Moines reports a dispute over a Farm Bureau policy statement that Iowa farmers oppose price supports for hogs and cattle. Shenandoah farmers Anderzhon and Teachout accused Howard Hill of misrepresenting farmers.
Senator George says the select committee may report next week on whether improper influence affected Senator Francis Case during the natural gas bill debate. Hearings Friday and Saturday are planned with seven witnesses summoned, while other witnesses remain possible.
Mrs. Breta Invick of Decorah reached her 100th year in January joining Iowa centenarians. Born in Norway she moved to Winneshiek County at age 14 and has lived there ever since.
Washington County’s 1956 corn acreage allotment runs 82 632 acres, down 13 561 from 1955, as Iowa totals shrink due to high national corn stocks. County officials will start farm allotment calculations for March 2 notices and farm price supports depend on compliance. Nearby counties show varied allotments across Henry, Iowa, Jefferson, Johnson, Keokuk, and Louisa counties.
Rear Adm George Dufek announced a four hour helicopter search of the Rockefeller foothills failed to locate the missing Navy plane carrying seven men. The search crew found wreckage of an old aircraft likely Bernt Balchen's 1929 Byrd expedition Fokker, while plans to launch another Otter plane from Kainan Bay proceed.
Washington High School initiated twenty four new members into the local Thespians chapter Tuesday evening in the auditorium with parents as guests. The group joins eight returning members from last year under faculty sponsor James Hervey.
