Licensing of P-60 Declared Contrary to Iowa Law

An Iowa legislative committee found that agriculture secretary Clyde Spry issued a P-60 salt base anti freeze license in 193? that violated state law and was unsound scientifically. The panel urged further probes by the state bureau of criminal investigation and noted the investigation was hindered by political pressure. Spry revoked the license in December after the interim committee’s recommendation.

Fire Shells Hit Seoul As UN Forces Press Advance

Allied artillery fired into Seoul for the first time since Communist forces retreated from the city. U S and United Nations units attacked south of Seoul while heavy air raids blasted Chinese reinforcements entering Korea from Manchuria. Task force Colvin tanks moved within gunshot of Seoul as spotter planes confirmed shells landing inside the city.

Urge Attendance At World Day of Prayer Service

Washington groups urge members to attend the World Day of Prayer program Friday at 2 PM in the Methodist church. The World Fellowship committee of the YWCA reminded YWCA members of the event. A skit by women from several participating churches will be part of the service.

Remington Guilty of Federal Charge

William W. Remington former government economist was found guilty of perjury for lying under oath about being a communist. A seven woman five man jury convicted after 4 hours 30 minutes of deliberation. Judge Gregory S Noonan set sentencing for 2 p.m. EST with a possible five year term and 2000 dollar fine.

Officers of the Iowa Staters club reported this afternoon that the banquet and program planned for tonight at the YMCA have been cancelled due to speakers being unable to travel from Ames. A new date is hoped.

Rev J A Cochran 81 Dies at Home Here

Rev J A Cochran an 81 year old Baptist minister died at his East Second Street home at 2 10 this morning after illness since Thanksgiving. Funeral services will be held at the Baptist church here Sunday at 1 30 and again at 3 30 in Lockridge. Burial will be in Lockridge cemetery with IOOF lodge in charge. Survivors include his wife a son Joseph A Cochran a step daughter and three daughters plus 12 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

Army Orders Rail Workers Back To Jobs By Saturday Afternoon

The army orders striking rail workers to return to work by 3 p.m. CST Saturday or face firing and loss of seniority. Pay raises total 12 1 2 cents for yard crews and 5 cents for road service, retroactive to October 1, while the government maintains control of the rail system pending a new agreement. Stephen Craig Bealer son of Mr and Mrs Donald Bealer is recovering from an operation at University hospital in Iowa City. He swallowed a peanut Saturday morning grew ill Sunday and the operation was performed Sunday night. He is confined for at least 10 days in room 1d4 W.

Des Moines area expected cloudy with light snow this afternoon into tonight. Highs near zero in extreme northeast and around 25 in the southwest. Tonight lows around 5 below in the extreme northwest to 5-15 above elsewhere. Friday snow spread across most sections with colder southwest winds, highs 5-15. Winds turn northerly Friday, with continued cold further outlook. Saturday partly cloudy with little temperature change.

Butane Blast Hits Minnesota Mining and Mfg Plant

A boilerlike explosion at the Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing plant in St Paul killed at least six and wounded about 54. Foreman John Richards smelled gas before the blast in the mineral building, a five story section. Fire followed, walls were blown out, and windows shattered as 30 workers labored to control the blaze.
