Call for Direct Vote on Direct Election of Senators

Washington Feb 7 at a meeting of the National Progressive Republican league executive committee a call urged all favoring direct election of U S senators to contact their senators and back the Borah resolution proposing a constitutional amendment. It notes decades of state petitions and House passage of similar measures and warns sixty two Senate votes are needed for passage with a favorable Senate outcome expected soon. Attendees included Senators Bourne Bristow Clapp and Representatives Norris Hubbard of Iowa Lenroot.

Chicago markets report hogs receipts about 30 000 with prices from 7 20 to 8 00 for choice heavy to good. Cattle receipts 16 000 with steers around 4 80 to 6 80 and cows 3 00 to 5 40. Explosion Kills Nine at Ishpeming Gelatine Plant

Nine men die at Pluto Powder company's gelatine factory near Ishpeming Michigan when a mysterious explosion roars through the building. One missing believed blown apart and a worker injured as rescuers recover scattered remains and the ruined gelatine plant. Indianapolis reports say Hoosier poet James Whitcomb Riley is not seriously ill. Dr Carleton McCulloch says Riley is much better, stronger, and more articulate than after his paralytic stroke three months ago. He is not in immediate danger.

Black Hand Attacks in Pennsylvania Leave Two Men Wounded

Torn Apart on Shaft at Kellogg Plant

Battle Creek, Mich February 7 Edwin W Douchey millwright for Kellogg Food Company was killed while repairing a 30 foot belt in the Lincoln and Aldrich street plant. His body was torn to pieces after the belt snapped free and wrapped him around the shaft. J H Hungerford his assistant witnessed the tragedy and coroner Joe ae investigated. Douchey was about 50 and married.

Bloomington man walks off trestle after drink hold

Bloomington Indiana February reports a man named Hauer Chandler of Bedford walked off the Indianapolis Southern trestle on Piney Street while intoxicated. He fell about fifteen feet but suffered no broken bones and was rushed by ambulance to Bloomington Hospital for evaluation.
