Washington County drives appeal still short of goal

The Washington County TB and Health Association has not reached its $4 087 86 goal and urges last minute gifts. The final report will be on March 1, and contributions remain greatly appreciated. The county assessor’s office will stay open all next week due to weather, for personal property assessments and homestead and veteran’s exemptions. Ernest Lund urged nonreporting taxpayers to complete assessments by week’s end at Main Street station, near the courthouse.

Good Roads group calls for new road funding in Iowa

The Iowa Good Roads Association urges continued pay-as-you-go financing but warns it is slipping behind road needs. It proposes revenue raises including diesel 2 cents and gasoline 1 cent per gallon, lifting gasoline tax to eight cents and diesel to ten cents, plus fees and tax adjustments to bolster highway funding.

Iowa seeks out of court settlement from Charles Pfizer American Cyanamid Bristol-Myers Olin Mathieson and Upjohn after suit filed Jan 17 1968. Turner says settlement could total 1.5 to 1.8 million for state counties welfare programs hospitals and individuals. Nixon to Europe trip aims to bolster NATO ties

President Nixon announced a February 23 departure for a six city European tour to meet five allied leaders in Brussels London Bonn West Berlin Rome and Paris. He plans exploratory talks with Soviet leaders and a possible summit after careful preparation. He will meet Pope Paul VI and press for nuclear nonproliferation while stressing European unity and Middle East stability.

Fire damages Ottumwa clothing shop in downtown wave

A Wednesday evening fire in Ottumwa Iowa caused about 5000 dollars in damage to the Tots to Teens Shop in the downtown area. Firemen reported smoke and water damage to stock and said the blaze cause is under investigation. The store is owned by Albert L Yarowksy.

Iowa Weather Outlook: Drizzle North. Cold Front Maintains Temps

United Press International reports a chance of drizzle or freezing drizzle mainly in the north through Friday with little temperature change. Lows in the 20s, highs Friday around 25. Saturday outlook shows rain in the southeast and snow in the northwest with only minor temperature changes.

Radar site transfer to Washington Community School District

Congressman Fred Schwenger announced an agreement to transfer surplus radar site along Highway 1 southwest of Washington to the Washington Community School District. The General Services Administration will assign the site to Health, Education and Welfare before transfer. The district plans storage use in a small building, with fence work to improve the bus yard. The radar tower will be moved to Case Field for scouting and photography. the city will reuse the scanner as a backstop on baseball diamonds.
