The House approved a diluted version of the full employment bill and sent it to the Senate. The compromise, crafted in a house Senate conference, aims to declare government responsibility to seek conditions for useful employment opportunities while President Truman favored the stronger Senate version.
The OPA announced a sugar price increase of six-tenths of a cent per pound or three cents per five-pound box. The rise stems from higher costs of the 1946 Cuban sugar crop arriving in the United States.
A final report shows Washington County raised 2494.22 dollars from Christmas seals, up from last year. Of the total, 784.55 goes to state tuberculosis work and 1745.67 funds local anti tuberculosis activities including education, testing, x rays, and patient aid.
Sen. Charles Tobey used a senate naval affairs recess to press charges against Edwin W. Pauley’s nomination as navy undersecretary. Ickes repeated claims that Pauley offered to raise funds in exchange for quashing an oil lands title suit. Pauley denied the accusations as the Supreme Court review of the title lands suit continued.
Striking tugboatmen in New York vote to not return to work on 450 government seized harbor craft. About 500,000 CIO members planned a two hour stoppage in New York to support western union strikers. Philadelphia gears for a citywide transit strike next week as AFL drivers strike east St. Louis service lines.
A cold wave hit Iowa with near blizzard conditions in the northwest and high winds. Des Moines saw a 65 degree high and a 19 degree low as temperatures swung dramatically. A storm produced a tornado and barn damage near Blencoe, with roads washed out and at least one death blamed on wind related accidents as northwest Iowa faced worse conditions. A blizzard also hit Minnesota with driving winds.
Ewland county chairman SW Easter said the campaign total reached about 13 000 pounds with 251 bundles loaded for overseas. Washington sent 8800 pounds to a warehouse in Kings County for sorting and coast port shipment while other towns contributed.
A heavy snowstorm across eastern South Dakota blanketed the region with 10 to 20 foot drifts and winds up to 50 mph. Officials warned travel would be near zero as air bus and train service faced cancellations while residents in Pierre and surrounding areas began digging out from one of the worst storms in years with the system expected to wind down later today.
Lutheran Pastor L M Bleihwell arrives as new Immanuel Lutheran Church leader in Washington. He shifts from Onalaska Wisconsin where he led a parish for five years and will reside with his family in the church parsonage at 32 South Law Avenue. He studied at Northwestern College Watertown and Ev Lutheran Theological Seminary Thiensville and was ordained in 1938 after serving Cataract Wisconsin.
At the Leon Beatty post last night the county Legion gathering was set for February 11 in the Legion rooms with Iowa department commander Ralph Stuart of Hampton to speak. First district commander Paul Fulton of Burlington will attend, and Washington county Legion members and their partners are invited for an eight o'clock evening event with music by the Henry Links en orchestra of Davenport.
Thorpe Well company of Des Moines submitted the lowest bid among three for the Washington water works well project, about 4101,000, with the contract awaiting changes in specifications. Work delay until Mt. Pleasant is finished, then drilling to 1,800 to 2,400 feet to reach softer water, with total costs around 31,000 for the 1,800 foot level and additional expense for deeper drilling. Thorpe has prior experience drilling in the region, including local shallow wells for Stutsman Turkey Packing Plant and Washington Soy Products Plant.
The Post discussed the March of Dimes effort last month and plans for a March initiation by the drill team led by George Baker. A supply of Legion buttons arrived and will be issued by Adjutant Howard Miller. A ways and means committee was proposed to boost post entertainments and finances. The Auxiliary served creamed chicken on biscuit and will handle luncheons at future post meetings.
Rescue crews removed the last survivors from the Yukon wreck off the Alaskan coast after a blizzard drove the liner onto rocks. Fourteen survivors were treated in Seward as 19 remained missing from the 495 aboard.
Della E. Brookhart 68 a former nurse and sister of late Senator Smith W. Brookhart died at 4 40 this morning at Washington county hospital after a five year illness and stroke. Funeral 2 pm Friday at L A Jones funeral home conducted by Dr. Fred E. Miller. Burial Elm Grove cemetery. Surviving are three sisters and a brother.
Trans continental and Western Air, Inc. airliner Star of Paris arrived at Orly at 3:02 p.m. with 36 passengers and a new commercial speed record of 15 hours and 54 minutes for the New York to Paris flight. The aircraft is scheduled to depart Paris tonight for the return trip.
Two pickets were killed and three wounded when armed guards halted an eastbound Toledo Peoria and Western freight train near Gridley Illinois. The strike by railroad unions has produced a second violent incident after a four month dispute begun October 1 following wartime railroad seizures.
Postmaster M C DeLong announces new weight limits for parcels to soldiers receiving mail at army and fleet post offices. The maximum weight rises to 11 pounds from five with no changes for parcel post to base personnel in the country.
