IOWA CITY John Mooney former editor of the Daily Iowan who stirred debate over the Iowa football program last fall has accepted a position with the Chicago Tribune, according to friends in town.
Six or more cars were smashed in Knoxville with the windows broken and loot taken. Officers could not immediately determine what was stolen as most vehicles were parked outside the Marion theater.
Joe Leist, 25, of Humboldt, crowned champion eater after downing 202 cracker and cheese sandwiches and 19 bottles of pop. Keith Johnson finished as runner up with 6 sandwiches. The crowd was fed by 8,000 sandwiches in attendance.
In Oskaloosa two cars were stolen. The thieves took John Clark’s vehicle first, drove it two blocks, then abandoned it after discovering a later model owned by W. R. Brubaker of Harvey. Brubaker’s car remained missing Sunday night.
Cedar Rapids professor C Harve Geiger dean of Coe College has completed his doctoral work in education at Columbia University New York. He plans to return this spring to complete final examinations and receive the PhD.
Dr. Paul C. Packer dean of the University of Iowa College of Education completed a five month inspection of the Philippine educational system. He and President EB C. t of Purdue University studied the layout and proposed improvements to authorities there.
SIOUX CITY The baby son of Mr and Mrs Fred Kassing was born in an altercation speeding to a hospital. The four mile trip was half covered when the baby arrived. The car driver assisted the father with the delivery.
Ruth Rogers, 16, an East High junior, died from a skull fracture after a car swerved into a group of nine youths walking home from a skating party. She never regained consciousness.
Sheriff Cass A. Bullis of Harrison county seeks Donald Dinsmore a 27 year old Logan truck driver on charges of contributing to the delinquency of a minor for allegedly eloping with Phyllis Rotheway a 15 year old Missouri Valley High School pupil. A warrant was issued by Justice E. B. Black of Logan on complaint by the girl’s father F A Rotheway a farmer between Logan and Missouri Valley.
Cedar Falls news describes Bartlett Hall girls at Iowa State Teachers College instituting a dormitory discipline plan. First offense yields a verbal warning, second offense earns a pink slip, and a third offense leads to blue penalties. Subsequent measures include supervised study and weekend campusing after 8 pm.
Washington February 6 The Senate voted 72 to 9 to reject Floyd H Roberts for a federal judgeship in Virginia marking the first Roosevelt judicial nomination defeat of the New Deal era. Amlie was attacked as a left wing coalition advocate aiming to alter the economy and constitution.
Two 19 year old escapees from the state prison farm at Sioux Falls were arrested in Sisseton by Sheriff Peter Wickham. A Sioux Falls radio early broadcast and citizen tips aided the capture after the men abducted a cab driver and forced a Hur-on man to drive them to Watertown before releasing him.
John Shalla and his sister Nate Shalla of Washington received word yesterday of the death of their brother Frank Shalla, 85, at Odell Nebraska after a fall broke his hip. He was taken to a hospital in Odell. Funeral services will be held tomorrow in Odell.
More than 300 people toured the Cooperative Service company’s new refrigerated locker plant on North Marion on its opening day. Manager Glenn Holden said 125 lockers have been rented, with demand rising daily. The facility handles refrigeration, butchering, and storage of beeves and hogs with the system working well. George Jarrard received a year locker and Dorothy Darnell got a six month rental.
Funeral services for W. C. Mayhew were held at the United Presbyterian church Saturday afternoon with Rev. W. M. Nichol Jr and Rev. Arthur Atack presiding. The pallbearers included M.
Perry L Ayers 78, of Wellman, died at Iowa City hospital after a lengthy illness. He was a farmer by trade, lived mainly in Pilotburg Wellman area, and retired in 1919 to Wellman. Survived by son Howard L Ayers of Oumwa, three daughters Mrs Wionie Carr Pomona Calif Miss Una Ay Seattle WA and Mrs Elliel Carr Iowa City, and many grandchildren. Funeral Tuesday at 1 PM at Wellman Methods Church with Wellman Mason in charge. a number of Masons from Washington expected. He was a charter Mason, member of Eastern Star and the Journal Three-Quarter Century Club.
DeLong, Warnock, Wolfe, Van Nostrand, Crozier and Anwyl named in obituary. Burial occurred in Elm Grove cemetery.
A rebuilt smaller fire truck returned to service boosting department efficiency after a three week downtime for modernization. The unit now features a 160 gallon water tank replacing the former chemical tank, a rebuilt seat, a bright red repaint, a new hose reel and rear loading lights. Bud Fields and Ray Cox led the rebuild with upholstery by Scott Furniture. about $1,000 was spent on equipment and $25 in remodeling per cent accuracy.
The Ohio River rode above flood levels in Kentucky as the seasonal crest moved toward Louisville. Forecasters noted improving conditions with milder temperatures and rain giving way to colder fair weather. Red Cross reports 7,000 families forced from homes across West Virginia Kentucky Ohio Tennessee and southern Illinois due to the rising waters.
Mr and Mrs William Morgan of Burlington today became owners of the Delicatessen on Most Washington street after buying it from Mr and Mrs Cletus Ruxlow They plan to continue the same menu plate lunches and keep the current kitchen staff The Morgans bring business experience and will relocate soon with their son Robert and Mrs Morgans aunt Miss Mary Cline in Washington for the time being
Kilby prison riot subdued by guards and police using tear gas to lock inmates in cells after four convicts wrecked a room in the prison cotton mill.

Paul Kyle of Iowa City Bill Kyle and Pete Cnossen spent yesterday in Waterloo Mr Cnos sen spent the day with his brother and sister in law Mr and Mrs Owen Cnossen and family and the Kyle brothers visited friends.
Washington Bicycle Battalion No. 3 under the county safety council approved two rulings at a Saturday session. Absent members after three consecutive meetings must surrender their membership tags, and riders may go without tights until six o'clock for the next few weeks. George Mohr led the discussion amid new member joins as a bicycle court set to try six to eight offenders for safety rule violations.
Mrs. J Parkinson of Palo Alto California died after a paralysis stroke. Marie Scofield Parkinson, born in Palo Alto around 69 years ago, was the daughter of Mr and Mrs William Scofield. Survived by husband two sons Jack and Robert and daughter Sarah Gray Parkinson, also sister and two brothers all of Palo Alto.

Des Moines reports John Wessels, a young independent who won the secretary of state election, considering legal action against former secretary Robert O’Brian for 450 dollars. The court found no merit in O’Brian’s challenge and awarded costs, while a sovereign salary dispute looms. A tame teachers annuity bill seeks 1.26 million dollars in state funds, a scaled-back figure from 4 million, moving through the Senate with cross-party sponsorship.

Mr and Mrs Glen T Ross become owners of the Vare lety store on the south side of the square previously run by Mr and Mrs B B J Trumbull. The shop is renamed Ross Variety and will keep most of the former stock with Roy Morality and Hora continuing as tenants. The couple plan to add a few new lines while staying in the same location at 11% South Third Avenue.
