In Salem Oregon deputy fiscal officer W R Barrows estimates that state workers spend at least 30 minutes daily on coffee during rest periods. The result is a fringe benefit equal to 5 percent of each worker’s pay as a cost estimate.
In Belfast Irish Catholics attacked troops with gelignite bombs in a series of hit and run sorties. Twenty seven people were arrested by army snatch squads. A gasoline bomber, 8 years old, was captured. An army spokesman called the city uneasy but relatively calm and praised local priests for helping disperse crowds.
High winds hampered cleanup as Iowa endured five to seven inches of new snow from a winter storm that moved in Thursday. Drifts clogged roads, visibility dropped, schools closed, and minor accidents plus a power outage affected several regions. A trailer fire gutted a Fairview trailer after a heater malfunction.
Apollo 14 astronauts Alan B. Shepard and Edgar D. Mitchell made a manual lunar landing at Fra Mauro, with Shepard becoming the fifth man on the moon. They planned a four to five hour surface trek to erect a science observatory and collect a moon rock, amid brief computer trouble.
