Widow praised for saving six in Carbondale blaze

In Carbondale Pennsylvania a 52 year old widow is lauded for saving six people from a 42 million dollar fire that devastated the business district. Firefighters battled the stubborn flames as others elsewhere left hundreds homeless in NE Pennsylvania.

Hot dog starts fire gutting two story Goshen house

A dog named Rover caused a blaze in Goshen New York when it lay near a gas heater and dived under a sofa. The fire gutted a two story house and a woman was hospitalized.

Tensions Rise as Taipeis Nationalists Prep Tachen Evacuation

Nationalist and American sources report plans to evacuate the Tachens under U S 7th Fleet protection may be announced soon amid pre dawn bombings and naval actions. Bombers hit Communist gun positions and ships near Yushan and Yikiang islands with several vessels sunk or damaged. Cmdr Tseng Ah Kwang of the Communist 5th Fleet was reported killed in a separate air strike. Twelve Americans are said to be stationed on Quemoy reinforcing defenses near Communist positions.

Man Pays 27Year Old Debt In Surprise Meeting

Menlo Man Dies In Car Truck Collision

Joseph James, 33, Menlo, Iowa, was killed when his car crossed a curve on U S 6 and struck an Omar Bakery semi driven by Donald L. Mainelli, 26, Omaha. Mainelli escaped injury as his truck tipped and blocked the highway for nearly three hours.

Big Snowstorm Deluges Great Plains and Chicago

A massive snowstorm dumped up to 29 inches over the Great Plains, pushing east to Chicago where near blizzard conditions developed last night. The system stretched through Minnesota Wisconsin and parts of Indiana with a forecast of up to two more inches before changing to freezing rain.

Chemical control of weeds and brush shows strong results

On April 28 1954 Tom Robb and Dutch Sylvester conducted a weed brush and tree control demonstration on the George Tripp farm near Washington involving 4D herbicide brush killer and basal spray. A June 9 result demonstration drew 75 attendees with visible weed suppression and brush/tree damage. A follow up meeting is planned February 8 at 1 15 pm at the Washington YMCA sponsored by the county extension service.
