Steubenville resident Thomas Cain attempted to thaw frozen water pipes with a blow torch. The device ignited a blaze that required firefighting crews, rather than a plumber, to control the inferno at his home.
Rapid plans are under way for the annual Trade Show to be held at the Washington Armory on March 17 and 18. Sponsored by the Washington Junior Chamber of Commerce, the event mirrors last year’s successful format with merchant booths around the walls, door prizes each evening, and a full entertainment program. Jaycee president and organizers Leon Hillman Don Batterson Dick Ross Phil Kneen Bing Miller and others are assisting Bill Perdock, general chairman, with preparations.
The Washington County Beef Producers association outlined its annual meeting and banquet set for Monday March 2 at 6 50 PM in the Washington YMCA. J C Holbert of Washington will speak as president of the Iowa Beer Producers association. Tickets cost 2 and are available from directors or the extension office.

Mayor R E Arthur urged cooperation to resolve past tensions, with many current and former council members and city staff in attendance. dinner was prepared by Emma Barnett and led by Charles Denison.
The Iowa House rejected two Palmer reapportionment proposals 84 to 19 and 92 to 7 and eyed others. The main McFarlane measure would grow the House from 108 to 116 with seats for the seven most populous counties. Palmer proposed 124 seats with one per county plus extra based on population. the Senate of 50 remained unchanged.
The American Meat Institute said ending government controls will remove compulsory beef grading. Under current rules beef is labeled choice good or other designations with no in-between grades, and some cattle fall between categories and are mispriced.
The VFW sponsors the final young adult dance in its community service series. The event is Friday evening at the VFW hall with Stalder's orchestra providing the music.
Washington reports the Agriculture Department is weighing emergency credit loans to help cattlemen hit by falling prices. Senator Monroney urged action to avert a farm economic collapse and save cattle values, with an estimate the program could cost under 10 million dollars and might even be zero.
Kenneth F Millsap director of the Mid America Foundation at Parsons College will speak tonight at the high school auditorium as part of the second Community Forum program. He will discuss the topic Mid America for the audience. season tickets will be honored and individual admissions may be purchased at the door.
In Memphis Tennessee pranksters altered a street sign by painting Leath Street as Pp. The incident involved vandalism on a local road, prompting authorities to plan cleanup and investigation. No injuries reported.
Secretary of State John Foster Dulles arrived in Bonn to press West Germany to back a European army this year. He warned that slow European unity could bring cuts in American aid unless substantial progress is made within 73 days. Dulles and Harold Stassen plan further stops in Holland Belgium and Luxembourg before returning to Washington.
Eleanor Pease and Ettie Zomer, known as the Morrison Sisters, appear on KSO Des Moines Saturday at 10 30 A M with guitarist Gordon Bowman formerly from the Ole Opry in Nashville Tennessee. Washington friends recall the sisters with affection.
Former British Foreign Secretary Herbert Morrison warned in the House of Commons that the de neutralization of Formosa could drag the United States into war with the Chinese mainland. He said the Labor Party would oppose sending British troops to America’s aid and criticized the government for not consulting Britain in advance. The debate labeled the move a grave mistake with real dangers of conflict between China and U.S. forces.
AFL shoremen refused to cross picket lines at the Holland and New York docks causing potential halts in the nations largest port. Two trans Atlantic liners Le De France and Constitution faced uncertain docking with over 1000 passengers. Longshoremen at piers declined to respond to the 8 am shape up call as a threatened AFL revolt appeared not to materialize.

Members of Leon Beatty American Legion post and the Legion Auxiliary plan a joint potluck supper at the Legion hall this evening at 6:30. After the meal a program of entertainment and social activity is scheduled.

Reuther says the Wage Stabilisation Board has virtually ceased to function and urges an executive order to end wage controls citing workers denied benefits.
Eleven charter members attended the Washington VFW post charter night banquet at the VFW hall. Six were recognized for 20 years of membership and three for 65 years. The event drew eleven past commanders and 66 VFW members, plus guests including Charles Fish of Muscatine and an Air Force serviceman stranded in Washington. The auxiliary prepared the meal and special awards went to Marsh Atkinson, Delbert Earls, and Herb.
