Washington reports plans to ease farm labor shortages by possibly using axis prisoners of war on a volunteer basis. Major O Walker of the food production administration says immediate prospects are uncertain but prisoners could be used on American farms once guarding issues are solved. He expresses confidence farmers will meet goals and notes prisoners would be one of several sources.
Carl H Daubendiek manager of the Jefferson Telephone Co describes a case in Green County where Thugwaday received 90 days in jail and a $500 fine for interrupting telephone service tied to the no gas no telephone service dispute. Judge Bruce M Snell noted the fine could be converted to hard labor at $3.83 daily if unpaid. Daubendiek had been convicted for failing to transmit messages promptly.
Scott county war price and ration board threats to close if space constraints persist. Chairman Harry W. Nabstedt said lack of adequate room, due to a Chicago OPA lease deal with Union Bank Building receivers, blocks operations and may force resignation.
Webster City reports the first draft delinquency case in Hamilton county. Iliff John Bernsmeier of Jewell failed to report for induction on January 25 after being ordered to report July 1 1942. He appealed for 1-A minister classification, was denied, and his case moved to federal prosecution.
Atlantic authorities probe a week of prowler visits to the Atlantic Canning Co. plant. Night watchman William Murray said two men attacked him with a heavy board, then opened fire as he ducked and retreated, with three shots reportedly fired over his head before the pair fled.
Des Moines reports the Des Moines river at Eddyville reached 21 feet, six feet above flood stage, today with ongoing rise at 9:90 a.m. A potential ten mile ice gorge break could unleash a devastating flood. Ottumwa Red Cross and police brace for emergency action. Traffic halted on Highway 137. water covers the road and ice nears the Eddyville bridge floor. Tracy remains at 11.8 feet.
Clarence Logan and county commander Norton urge 50 auxiliary firemen 50 auxiliary police 150 air raid wardens and other defense workers in Washington. About 175 members attended a high school meeting outlining monthly gatherings at the city hall and training under air raid wardens. New members may enroll at the city hall headquarters.
A union series of evening services brings together six Washington churches at the Christian church this Sunday with Rev. Ivan Riess of that church as preacher. The theme is Living Epistles and participants include pastors from the Methodist United Presbyterian Presbyterian Associate Presbyterian and Baptist churches with a girls sextet providing special music.
Virgil DeMarce 31, a Washington County soldier who enlisted May 23, 1942, died in England on Jan 29. Word reached Clar ence Brinning and came via his foster sister Mrs Ruth Webster of Cedar Rapids. Death reported as paralysis with prior hospital stays for a chest cold. DeMarce grew up in Washington, worked for Washington Dairy, and was known as Happy. He belonged to the Odd Fellows lodge.
Karle Libe spoke at the meeting last night on victory gardens and the defense workers of the county will cooperate with the program.
Carl W. Danielson of the Farm Credit Administration will be at the Farm Bureau office in Washington from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesday February 9. Farmers needing funds for seed feed tractor fuel and repairs for their 1943 crop should see him that day.
The Washington municipal band held a farewell party after rehearsal for members entering service. Milo Steele Jr and John Yousling left for the marines and air corps, with Eugene Dunlap Charles Mayo Max Lee and Director Maurice Prayton to follow. Remarks from honorees and others, plus letters from departed members, were shared. Ice cream and wafers were served by Ralph Schilling and Robert Custer.
South End store changes ownership with Jr and Mrs R C Watson selling stock and leasing to E J Blatter. Howard Schultz of Oskaloosa to run People s Grocery with nine years retail and five in fruits and vegetables. Opening day offers free coffee and doughnuts as the store debuts in Burlington.
John Atkinson near town reports ten pigs missing from his herd of 47 at the farm four miles west of town. The pigs average about sixty pounds each, and a search since Wednesday morning has found no clues or tracks indicating theft. This appears to be the first suspected livestock theft in the county for some time.
Use as little water as possible for cooking fresh vegetables. Place a tight cover on the pan and turn the flame just low enough for gentle boiling. Cook only until tender to preserve food values.
The Methodist Men’s Club held a fellowship dinner in the church dining room attended by about 50 men. Club president L. C. Wil lits led the program with officers Fred Bey and George Dare, and Leland Beneke introduced Charles Holden on leave from Pensacola Navy Base. Holden spoke on aerial photography instruction and class work while Ralph Scott outlined club and church efforts for youth. Les Dunlap spoke as well.
United Press reports heavy Allied bombing across Europe and North Africa. RAF strikes hit Turin Spezia and Lorient while the Ruhr and U boats bases were hit at night. American air power in North Africa claimed 52 German planes down. Lt. Gen. Frank M. Andrews named commander of American forces in Europe with plans to intensify air campaign. Tunisia sees little change as ground forces pause.
The Iowa senate delayed action on the administration bill to cut personal income tax by 50 percent for two years after voting 23 to 22 to adjourn for the weekend. An amendment to erase the tax in 1943 and 1944 failed 34 to 15, and another major amendment aimed to kill it was debated.
After a dinner the men’s chorus prepared for a laymen’s Sunday service. The report notes church support for servicemen and the evolving church partner relationships in post dinner remarks.
